Marvel Studios has reportedly started developing a new movie titled The Mutants, which could signal a decision not to call them X-Men anymore.
There hasn’t been any evidence for plans concerning the X-Men. Reports suggest that Kevin Feige has been brewing some plans for them since Walt Disney obtained 20th Century Fox in 2019.
Kevin Feige has previously said that they are figuring out the plan to include mutants in the MCU. There are tons of assumptions about Eternals setting up the mutant gene. The multiverse will fulfill as a gateway to bring some mutants from Fox’s X-Men license to the MCU.
The Illuminerdi reported that Marvel Studios has begun development on the MCU’s X-Men reboot. Kevin Feige is developing the project as usual. It is predicted that it is being formulated as a feature film.
Nonetheless, the decision to potentially not refer to the team as X-Men could have stemmed from the name not being as inclusive. Victoria Alonso (Marvel Studios EVP of Production) said in 2019 that she felt the name X-Men was outdated since there are so many women members.
Soon after, Feige said at San Diego Comic-Con that Marvel Studios was operating on bringing “mutants” to the MCU. He used the word mutants twice but didn’t say “X-Men” at all. However, that could be a coincidence, but the MCU could also abstain from borrowing the iconic mutant superteam name. It is even possible that The Mutants will obtain this title because it tells a saga about mutants in general and not particularly the X-Men.
This could permit the MCU to broaden the concept of mutants in a single movie with the central objective of rebooting the idea of the mutants. The X-Men squad name could then appear later and be used in forthcoming movies and titles.
About X-Men
X-Men is an American superhero film series based on the fictional superhero team of the same name, who originally appeared in a series of comic books created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and published by Marvel Comics.
20th Century Fox obtained the film rights to the characters in 1994, and after numerous drafts, Bryan Singer was hired to direct the first film, released in 2000, and its sequel, X2 (2003), while the third installment of the original trilogy, X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), was directed by Brett Ratner.
