James Gunn has reiterated during the marketing of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film that Volume 3 will be the final film wrapping up the story of the band of misfits, once and for all. And if those comments weren’t enough, the new Super Bowl trailer released by Marvel for the movie highlights one ominous detail – it’s time to face the music.
The new trailer dropped during the Super Bowl, along with trailers for The Flash, Creed, Air, and more. While the footage only drives the point of the official synopsis for the 2023 film, I figure you’d like to read the film’s plot once again. You can find it below, along with the new trailer:
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, our beloved band of misfits is settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Still reeling from the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.
The trailer has quite a bit of new information for us to dive right into, so let’s just get straight into it! The new trailer expands on Rocket’s creator, Chukwudi Iwuji’s High Evolutionary, who is one of the main antagonists of the 2023 film. According to himself, the High Evolutionary’s “sacred mission is to create a perfect society,” but Rocket knows him for what he truly is – someone who “just hated things the way they are.”
The High Evolutionary has come to collect Rocket back, and his found family will not let that happen! But Iwuji’s villain is not the only one who threatens the Guardians – the Sovereign’s Adam Warlock is also on their back. The new trailer gives us tiny glimpses of the new character, but we can clearly see him using his Quantum Magic to fight Drax and fly across a planet.
While the trailer gives us our first detailed looks at the two antagonists, I still can’t say whether Warlock and Evolutionary will team up against the Guardians or continue down their lonely paths to ensure the annihilation of the Guardians.
While we’ve all strongly believed that Rocket is definitely one of the Guardians who will bite the dust in their final adventure, I think he won’t be the only one. The new trailer heavily implies that Drax might not make it by the end of the upcoming film, and this certainly explains Bautista’s confirmation about this being Drax’s final appearance.
The trailer also alludes to Peter and past Gamora’s new relationship, which may or may not change during the threequel. It even gives us a new look of Nebula and Kraglin, where the former sports a new arm, and the latter can be seen holding Yondu’s arrow.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will mark the end of James Gunn’s MCU trilogy after its release on May 5, 2023.
