Marvel supremo Kevin Feige has recently announced that the MCU could get a soft reboot as early as 2027 after the release of Avengers: Secret Wars.
In a recent interview with Variety, Feige said that the MCU has ‘barely scratched the surface’ of the story potential from Marvel Comics. However, tapping into those will require soft reboots of certain elements to consolidate the timeline, trimming redundant plots and bringing back people removed from the franchise.
Joana Robinson, author of the book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, also spoke on The Watch podcast and dropped a bombshell that can be detrimental to the franchise’s future.
We have a quote from Kevin Feige sort of implying that, like, Secret Wars will serve as a soft reboot in which they can prune everything… That’s not to use a Loki-ism. [They’ll] prune everything that’s not working and just keep what is [working], or bring back people you thought were gone forever.
If we read her book, we get further hints at what to expect in the future. MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios has a final chapter named,’ How Much We Have Left.’ There, she talks about a meeting where Kevin Feige reveals a poster from 1988 by Joe Rubinstein and Ed Hannigan containing hundreds of Marvel characters.
It clearly indicates that Marvel Studios has just scratched the surface of the giant called the MCU!
As the MCU spilled over into streaming programs and the Multiverse Saga, Feige had to learn different lessons from the comics: how superheroes periodically needed to be rebooted, how to stop variants and spinoffs from spiraling out of control, how an annual mega-crossover event could unify a disparate line of characters.
However, the most notable question now concerns the need for such a reboot (even ‘softly’), given how successful Marvel’s releases have been.
The answer is that the studio needs to consolidate the timeline because of its regressing reputation of late. Moreover, the recently acquired rights to former Fox Marvel characters like the X-Men and the Fantastic Four also demand a reboot.
The reboot will also help the studio trim off whatever is not working and keep only the good parts while introducing fan favorites like TChalla, IronMan, Thanos, and other dead or retired characters.
The ongoing Loki season 2 already has many subtle hints regarding an MCU reboot and Avengers: Secret Wars. Also, the multiverse was demolished after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars in the comics, and new storylines emerged from the debris. That would be a perfect time for Feige and his team to start everything afresh.
Loki season 2 has already confirmed that the First Multiversal War of 2321 reset the timeline once. Now, Sylvie’s murder of the timeline guardian and the emergence of Kangs are also setting us up for a repeat of that demolition.
Therefore, a reboot will be a welcome gift to trim the exponentially increasing variants and spinoffs that are exceeding our mental capacity with every new creative.
