Marvel Announces Thunderbolts’ Antihero Cast at the D23 Expo ‘22

Just a few months ago, Marvel revealed its Thunderbolts project at the San Diego Comic-Con but gave us absolutely no more details about it. Well, it seems like they were waiting to make the big announcement at the D23 Expo 2022!

So what details have they finally let out?

Marvel has announced that Thunderbolts will be releasing on July 26, 2024. It will be MCU’s 37th film and the last installment of Phase 5. The movie’s main lineup will be Yelena Belova, Winter Soldier, Red Guardian, US Agent, Taskmaster, Ghost, and Contessa Fontaine.

Sadly, we don’t have any videos yet, nor any word on the filming and production schedule.

1. Who is part of Thunderbolts’ main lineup?

This ensemble is going to get you all fired up! Florence Pugh will be headlining as Yelena Belova. Joining her will be Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell’s US Agent, Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Contessa Fontaine.

This is quite a power-packed group that has never been in the same frame before. While I’ve been anticipating seeing Yelena in some form of a New Avengers team, this one is equally, if not more, exciting.

Here’s a concept picture of the characters that was shared at the expo:

2. What is Thunderbolts about?

As you can deduce, this movie will connect a few storylines from Black Widow, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Ant-Man and the Wasp (possibly even Quantumania).

The Thunderbolts

But if you look closer, you’ll find that Thunderbolts reminds you of an ensemble movie from another superhero franchise—DC’s Suicide Squad. Thunderbolts surely won’t be exactly on those lines, but with the mix of anti-heroes, villains, and morally ambiguous characters, Thunderbolts is quite a unique project for the MCU.

No details about the plot have been revealed just yet. So in the meantime, catch up on all the above MCU shows/films and even try dipping your toes into some Thunderbolts comics if you get the time. It is possible they might adapt a story from it!

3. When will Thunderbolts release?

Thunderbolts is set to release on July 26, 2024, right after Captain America: New World Order. As of now, the film should not be subject to any delay or date change.

There’s plenty of time left for the movie—roughly two years, six MCU films, and a dozen Disney+ shows’ worth of time. I expect any footage, visuals, or marketing to begin in earnest only in 2023.

4. About Thunderbolts

Thunderbolts is an upcoming superhero-fantasy movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige officially announced Thunderbolts as a movie at the San Diego Comic-Con.

The Thunderbolts are a fictional antihero team appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The group consists primarily of reformed supervillains, similar to the Suicide Squad.

The film will be based on this group, consisting of Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, a.k.a US Agent, Florence Pugh’s Yelena, and Daniel Bruhl’s Zemo. It is set to release on May 2, 2025 and will wrap up Phase 5 of the MCU.
