Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker is one of the most memorable characters. The actor has committed his youthful years to multiple projects in the franchise, but he may be done now.
Lucasfilm recently announced more Star Wars movies, spanning from the dawn of the Jedi to a film featuring Rey’s new Jedi Order. The latter may feature Rey interacting with ghosts of the previous Order’s Jedi Masters, which gave the fandom hope that we’d get to see Hamill’s Skywalker once again. Sadly, the Time Runner actor has some bad news on that front.
Speaking to THR about his latest film, The Machine, when Mark Hamill was asked if he’d ever return to the role. His answer? Prepare your hearts; you’re not going to like this:
No, I don’t have any expectations of that happening. – Mark Hamill
The actor’s blunt answer leaves little for the imagination. Maybe that’s why it’s harder to wrap my head around the fact we’ll never see him swing a lightsaber or wear the iconic Jedi robes again.
The actor returned to the role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi for his final appearance as Luke Skywalker, apart from his deep-fake younger version in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. However, the franchise actor is content with leaving the job in more able hands.
While it is disappointing to hear from him about never returning to the Star Wars universe again, Hamill’s not in the wrong for not mincing his words. Any false hope would only be more hurtful, and dragging out the character’s legacy with short cameos seems unnecessary.
Lucasfilm has previously tried to introduce younger actors to the old roles and has been burned – but perhaps it’s time to start again. What do you think about this sad, sad news? Let us know in the comments!
