Ever since the beginning, Steven and Marc have fought over the control of their body and settling the case of which one of them is “real.” Moon Knight Ep 5 was truly gut wrenching, with Steven learning he was just a personality that Marc created as a child to deal with his grief, trauma and abuse.
The truth does set one free, as this leads Steven to ultimately sacrifice himself while sailing through the Duat. As Steven undergoes a version of death, it made us question if he’d ever return to the show.
In Moon Knight Ep 6, Marc gives up his Field of Reeds afterlife to save Steven from the Duat. This second sacrifice helps them to escape via the Gates of Osiris. When Khonshu senses their presence in the mortal world, he heals their bullet wounds and resurrects them once again as his avatar.
I know I wasn’t alone with my heart jumping in fright at that one scene where we return to the psychiatric ward. Was Marc/Steven really imagining all of this?
But then we see (doctor) Harrow’s bloodied footprints and at once, it’s evident — Marc and Steven have gained clarity on their situation. They recognize that the psychiatric ward is just another way that their mind deals with the messy situations they’ve been in so far.
With each other’s help, they can finally navigate what is real and what is not.
Thus, when they pass through Osiris’ gates and re-enter the realm of the living, both Marc and Steven remain intact.
As to who ultimately gains control of the body, Marc and Steven know that the only way forward is together. So in their very first negotiation with Khonshu, they work in tandem to lay out the ground rules.
The best bit of this partnership is when they put their superhero garb and fight as Moon Knight/Mr Knight. Watching that whole fight sequence was pure joy — I couldn’t get enough of the exquisite transitions! This is how a well-oiled (killing) machine works.
At the end of the series as well, it’s clear that Marc and Steven have decided to live in equal control of their body. They not just switch seamlessly, but also seem to be talking to each other a lot more. Huh, who knew almost dying could actually be therapeutic to both of them?
My only concern is where does the love triangle involving Layla fit into this. Could this be MCU’s first polyamorous couple? I can’t wait to see how they settle the equation on this one.
