The first look at ‘Bucchigiri?!’ will surely leave you spellbound for many reasons. To start with, imagine one of the most classic genres getting mixed with something unreal. We are talking about ‘yanki’ or the ‘delinquent’ genre that has been popular since the 80s.
No doubt we have Tokyo Revengers as a perfect example of ‘yanki fantasy’, but ‘Bucchigiri?!’ seems to take inspiration from something different yet familiar.
On Sunday, Studio MAPPA unveiled the original anime ‘Bucchigiri?!’ at the MAPPA Stage Event 2023 with a teaser and visual. The studio also revealed the main staff and that the anime will premiere on January 2024.
The one-minute teaser shows the two main characters Araji Tomobishi and his friend Mataka Asamine. Many other undisclosed characters are also shown. Notice how the buildings, street alleys, and the school corridor are flooded with graffiti. In the end, right after the title, a spirit appears that looks like a genie.
You can also notice the strong inspiration from ‘The Arabian Nights’ or similar stories in the background music, the gun in the video, and the Arabic text on the staircase.
While the voice cast has not been revealed yet, the staff members were revealed at the event. The main members are listed below:

This anime is definitely on my list out of sheer curiosity. The choice of colors reminds me a little of ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’ too. Unfortunately, there is not much information about what the story is about, but it looks like there will be gang wars, at the least.
About Bucchigiri?!
‘Bucchigiri?!’ is an original anime series produced by MAPPA and directed by Hiroko Utsumi. Mappa and Utsumi have previously worked together on ‘Banana Fish’. The anime is scheduled for release in January 2024.
Araji Tomobishi reunites with his former friend Mataka Asamine. However, he gets pushed into battles with powerful individuals. Elsewhere, a shadow of a demon emerges.
