Filmmaker/Writer David S. Goyer is a connoisseur when it comes to writing comic adaptations.
He has a lot of experience in the superheroes department as his writing credits include The Dark Knight trilogy with Christopher Nolan, along with the first Man of Steel film.
It goes without saying that Goyer would have interesting and valuable insights on what goes into making a superhero movie, and in a new interview he revealed numerous details about the DCEU.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Goyer talked extensively about Henry Cavill’s return as Superman, DC vs. Marvel, and Warner Bros.’ influence will making a film for the DC universe.
When asked to comment on the recent rumors of Henry Cavill returning for a Man of Steel sequel, Goyer denied his involvement,
I think so. I’m not involved in it right now. I’ve heard the same rumors you’ve heard, but I’m not plugged into it. I’ve stepped away almost entirely from comic book-related projects other than Sandman, which I don’t really categorize as part of the normal DC universe.

The first MoS film became the starting point of what would be the ‘Snyderverse’ and grossed $668 million worldwide. Cavill returned to portray Superman in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.
Since Zack Snyder’s Justice League 2021 isn’t canon and WB decided to keep Whedon’s version in the DCEU (which is a stupid mistake btw), Zack Snyder won’t be returning to direct any future DCEU films despite his obsession with telling the Superman story.
However, Snyder recently claimed that Man of Steel being set in the Nolan-verse wasn’t entirely off the table.
When asked about it, Goyer commented,
“Not amongst us when I was doing Man of Steel, or among Nolan and myself. Chris always wanted to keep the Dark Knight films as a separate entity, and [the studio] kept wanting, understandably, to pull him into a whole DC expanded universe.
Chris obviously was a producer on Man of Steel, and it’s tempting to think they were linked, but they really weren’t. I mean, I’m sure one could retroactively do it.”
Goyer
Goyer also recalled a rather embarrassing moment for WB when asked about the worst note he’d received from the studio,
One note I got was on Man of Steel, where the ending involves Superman utilizing the pod that he arrived in as a child in order to bring down General Zod’s ship. The note we got from the studio said, “You have to change that.” We asked why.
They said, ‘Because if Superman uses that pod and it’s destroyed while saving the city, how is he ever going to get back home to Krypton?’ There was just this long pause, and we said, ‘Krypton blew up. You saw 30 minutes of it!’
Goyer
This once again shows that WB couldn’t care less about the actual storyline, and the DCEU could have a greater potential to strive without their interference (And, dare I say, be even better than the MCU. #RestoreTheSnyderVerse).
Goyer mentioned the reason why MCU thrived so much was because it had a consistent leadership and was faithful to the source material, a quality DCEU lacked.
Regarding the Man of Steel 2 rumors, Geekosity recently reported that Henry Cavill is set to cameo as Superman in The Rock’s Black Adam and wear his black costume from ZSJL.
If this rumor is true, is the Snyderverse officially going to be canon? With filming supposedly wrapping up soon, there should be no further delays. Guess we’ll have to wait till Black Adam’s release to find out, which is set for July 29, 2022.
About Justice League Snyder Cut
Co-produced by Warner Bros. and DC Films, Justice League Snyder Cut is the fifth film of the DC Extended Universe and based on the DC Comics superhero team. As the theatrical release, Zack Snyder’s Justice League features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, and Ray Fisher.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League follows the Justice League—Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg—as they attempt to save the world from the catastrophic threat of Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons.
Although fans have asked for Snyderverse to continue Warner Bros has no such plans.
