Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 149, titled “Perfect Perfection,” was a chapter we’ve been waiting for since the introduction of Maki Zenin.
The JJK world revolves around sorcerers and curses, with the latter being strong by worth. A sorcerer’s strength is often measured from their curse power, thus creating a disparity between low-grade and high-grade jujutsu sorcerers.
Enter Toji Fushugoro – a total badass of the Zenin clan. Toji had zero curse power, and yet he was one of the strongest jujutsu sorcerers and canonically the only one to obliterate Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto together. It was revealed that when you give up something so big like having any curse energy at all, it’s called heavenly restriction.
That’s why when Maki was revealed to have no curse energy, we thought that she’d be like Toji. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Akutami made us believe that Maki was just weak, plain, and simple, but that wasn’t true either.
In chapter 149, Mai Zenin reveals that identical twins are seen as one individual when it comes to curse energy, and this has been holding Maki Zenin back from her true potential.
Upon her death in the latest chapter, Mai takes her low-level curse energy with herself, leaving Maki with no curse energy and a heavenly restriction, and the result was astounding. It almost felt like Maki, too, died and resurrected in the body of a female Toji Fushigoro.
The panel where Ogi sees a reflection of Toji into Maki was undoubtedly the best part of the chapter.
After casting her daughters down as failures, Ogi Zenin leaves them to die at the beginning of chapter 149. He reveals that he’s as strong as his brother (head of the Zenin clan), but it was the failure of his children that kept hindered his political career and walked away from the chamber.
He suddenly feels a strong presence, identical to Toji Fushigoro, from inside the chamber and unleashes his strongest attack on Maki. A new cursed sword appears in Maki’s hand that seems to have come at the cost of Mai’s life. The cursed weapon looks like a short sword with a woven thread similar in appearance to Maki’s polearm.
Maki then stops Ogi’s attack and splits his head in half before he could react. The chapter ends with a panel of Maki standing tall and confident like Toji used to.
Throughout the chapter, Maki’s newfound freedom is depicted through bird and feather imagery. With her new life and determination, Maki undoubtedly powered up to take on even bigger enemies!
The next chapter for Jujutsu kaizen will be available on 30th May. I can’t wait until then to know if Mai is alive or not? And what does this new life mean for Maki?
