Make Deer Sounds in Valheim Slightly More Enjoyable with This Mod

For the most part, playing in the Norse afterlife of Valheim can be a pretty calming and enjoyable experience. Roaming around and crafting with rolling mounds of green, a serene misty landscape and somber lakes around you is nothing short of amazing.

But sooner or later, all this perfection is ruined by all the wild deer that are prancing around the landscape. And it’s not because they do something questionable, it’s simply because they sound really, really bad.

Valheim’s sound design is pretty great but this somehow doesn’t include the deer. They all make a kind of strangled sound; a garbled mix of many different animal noises as if they themselves are unaware of what they’re supposed to sound like. It can put a damper on things pretty fast.

Thankfully, there’s a fix for it. The Realistic Animal Sounds mod by Arens101 trades out some of Valheim’s original animal sounds for more realistically immersive ones.

According to Arens101, the mod changes deer idle sounds from “crazy duck-monkeys to actual grunts and calls used by wild deer” and changes deer alert sounds from “the sound of a rubber chicken being stepped on to an actual recording of a deer blowing its warning snort.” While that covers the sounds of the deer when they’re alive, the mod also changes deer death sounds from “the simultaneous below of a dozen geese through a jet engine to an actual deer bawl.”

Additionally, the mod adds more realistic sounds for boars and wolves.

All these tweaks are bound to make the game more immersive and definitely make deer sounds acceptable, but it’s important you know one thing: these more realistic sounds are probably not going to appeal to you very much either. While the modder has taken great efforts to make the sounds as realistic as possible, they still don’t sound very good.

The deer, when alive, sound like flatulent sheep at best and when struck to death by an arrow, sound like an animal huffing his disappointment. Nevertheless, the new sounds are still better than their default counterparts.
