Mahou Shoujo Pretty Sammy or Magical Girl Pretty Sammy is an OVA series based on Sasami’s character from the Tenchi Muyo franchise.
The 3-episode OVA released in 1995, and in 1996 it spawned a 26-episode TV series called Magical Project S. Sasami returned as a magical girl in the 2006 Sasami: Magical Girls Club series.
Pretty Sammy is a simple parody of the ‘Magical Girl’ genre with its unique cast and characters from the Tenchi Muyo series. It follows the main lead, Sasami, who is forced to become a Magical Girl!
The idea of parodying a genre isn’t new, like Seizei Ganbare Mahou, which is now getting a new season, also exaggerates the trope of Magical Girls and centers its humor around it.
With its heart-breaking friendships and funny parodies, the popularity of the show caused AIC to make a few plans. They decided to use Campfire (a Japanese crowdfunding site) to start a campaign to crowdfund the sequel’s PV.
According to the website, AIC had decided to crowdfund the sequel, as an animated series required a lot of money.
AIC has already successfully funded Megazone 23 XI and Megazone 23 SIN, and the production of both the series has been given the green light.
The possible sequel would be called Sammy 14, which shows Sasami in her teenage years. But how long will it take for a sequel to release?
1. Season 2 Release Date & Visuals
The sequel of Mahou Shoujo Pretty Sammy is most likely to release in late 2022. Pioneer released the OVA series in three videos from 1995 to 1997.
There are no official updates available for the show’s renewable status either from the show makers or the studio.
When the show is renewed for a sequel, it is unlikely to release for at least another year. The potential premiere for the sequel is in late 2022, or it could be delayed even later.
Pioneer released both the OVA and the TV series, Magical Project S. But, Funimation licensed and released the second TV adaptation, Sasami: Magical Girls Club.
The Campfire campaign seeks 10 million yen to fund the PV to pitch the sponsors to green light the series. However, the project now has only gathered about 1.2 million yen.
According to the announcement, if the campaign achieves its goal or even exceeds it, the studio would be able to make an OVA sequel. To make another 26-episode series would require a lot of money, which they currently don’t have.
AIC has produced the well-known Special A and Acchi Kocchi anime series. And it has recently released Season 5 of Tenchi Muyo Ryouoki, which tells us that the upcoming Pretty Sammy anime will be coming soon.
The Campfire project released new visuals on how the grown-up Sasami, Misao, and the other characters would look like. The other visual characters are Tsunami, Ramia, Rumiya, Washuu, Mihoshi, and Ryou-Ohki.
Pretty Sammy has three manga volumes based on the OVA and the TV series. However, there is a two-part short story based on the OVA continuity, which appeared in the Tenchi Muyo manga.
This could be added to the new premise of Sammy 14, where Sasami is in her teenage years.
The official sites have not released any teasers for the anime yet. We will update this article when we get the information.
2. Expected Plot
The sequel is titled ‘Sammy 14.’ As the title suggests, the proposed story takes place when Kawai Sasami is 14-years-old and a second-year student in middle school.
Sasami has been able to transform into a Magical Girl since elementary, and unknown to her, Misao too! However, both suddenly lose the ability to transform.
In Sammy 14, a new Magical Girl and a mystery beast will appear. Now, Sasami has to figure out what to do in this dire situation!
3. Recap
The story starts with Tsunami, the candidate queen to Juraihelm, selecting Sasami as her champion of justice ‘Magical Girl Pretty Sammy,’ with Ryo-Ohki as her guide.
Meanwhile, Tsunami’s rival, Ramia, has her brother turn another girl into a Dark Magical Girl to derail Sasami’s efforts.
The girl turns out to be Sasami’s best friend, Amano Misao, who turns into a chaotic ‘Pixy Misa.’ However, Misao doesn’t remember her time as Pixy Misa as Rumiya’s hypnosis prevents it.
Pixy Misa attacks Tenchi by turning Ryoko and Ayeka into love-love monsters, spreads the SynchroniCity program into Sasami’s computers, and uses Standardisation power to attract the moon towards Earth.
Pretty Sammy counteracts her attacks by dispelling Tenchi’s monsters, cures Bill of his evil mania using Miss Washu’s programming, and saves Earth from colliding with the moon.
Sometime later, a comet crashes on Earth, causing Ramia to become an amnesiac, and Misao gets attacked by a sorcerer.
Pretty Sammy defeats the villains, who turn out to be cosmic slimes from the comet, restoring Ramia’s memories.
4. About Mahou Shoujo Pretty Sammy
The story follows Kawai Sasami as she is suddenly imbibed with magical powers.
Sasami was given a magical baton that can transform her into a magical girl by the heir of the Magical Kingdom of Juraihelm. But the enemy has enlisted the help of a magical girl too, Pixy Misa!
Sasami can only swallow her pride and embrace her role as the champion of Justice, Pretty Sammy!
