Season 4 of Sex Education recently wrapped up production and will probably premiere sometime in the latter half of 2023. But following production’s end, Ncuti Gatwa, who plays Eric Effiong on the show, announced that he’s leaving and won’t be back for a potential season 5.
And even before any of us could recover from that hit, Emma Mackey is now suggesting she might be saying goodbye soon. The actress hasn’t confirmed her departure, but in a recent interview with Total Film (via Games Radar), she explained it’s been hard playing a teen while being in her 30s. You can read her quote below:
It’s just always tricky. It’s different when you’re playing a character that is sort of stuck in time. You know, we’re playing 17-year-olds, and we’re all almost 30; it is a bit weird. It’s a blessing because it is a launchpad, and it is something that has given us opportunities in different ways, but it’s something that I want to gracefully exit from and be happy that it exists and protect it and enjoy it in the time that it has existed in, but yeah, it needs to be left alone now I think.

The Sex Education actor also said that the show was like a “baptism of fire,” making the cast “stronger,” and now they “can all move on.”
We can all move on and take what we learned from Sex Ed as well because it has been a school, quite literally, for all of us. It’s just wonderful to have had that education and to have that baptism of fire and to have just been flung into that whole world. I think it’s made us stronger.

Mackey is late to the leaving train since several recurring cast members like Simone Ashley (Olivia), Tanya Reynolds (Lily), Patricia Allison (Ola), and Rakhee Thakrar (Emily Sands) aren’t returning for season 4.
Ncuti Gatwa will play the Fifteenth Doctor in the upcoming Doctor Who special, which is why he is leaving Sex Education. But now that Eric is gone and Maeve might leave soon, Sex Education will lose two of its main actors. If Netflix were to make a season 5, which hasn’t received a greenlight yet, we’d surely miss these characters.
Season 4 is already bringing a new outlook to Moordale High School, with Maeve off to the US, and it might be the perfect opportunity to call it quits while we still can. Do you think you’d want season 5 of sex Education without Eric and Maeve?
