While Made in Abyss will almost certainly be renewed for a third season, the manga material suggests that the anime’s comeback might be some years away.
The HiDive simulcast exclusive of Made in Abyss’ second season was one of the top episodes on the 2022 Summer anime broadcasting lineup.
Fans across the world are waiting down the days until the season 2 finale of Studio Kinema Citrus’ blockbuster series, which will be a one-hour-long finale named “Gold.”
Season 3 of Made in Abyss has yet to be formally announced ahead of the season 2 finale. Unfortunately, while a renewal is quite expected, a release date might be several years away – here’s why.
Made in Abyss Season 3 Renewal
As previously noted, Made in Abyss has yet to be publicly renewed for season 3 by Studio Kinema Citrus; however, the anime series is highly likely to continue into a third broadcast.
This is because the original manga series that the anime is adapting is still ongoing, and the TV adaptation has become one of the most popular series of the year.
Per AnimeGeek, the season 2 finale is expected to adapt until volume 10, chapter 60 of Akihito Tsukushi’s original series.
The good news is that a total of 11 complete Tankobon volumes have been published in Japan, with the series still releasing new chapters on a semi-regular basis; Tsukushi is known to release new chapters when they are finished, instead of on a regular schedule like most manga titles.
The Made in Abyss anime series should also prove popular enough to merit a third TV broadcast. Ahead of the season 2 finale, the anime is scoring an outstanding 8.4/10 on IMDB, 86% on Anilist, 4.4/5 on Anime-Planet, and 8.82/10 on MyAnimeList.
This makes Made in Abyss the highest-rated anime of the 2022 Summer broadcasting slate and the joint-third highest-rated anime of the entire year!
This is especially impressive considering that Made in Abyss season 2 has been simulcast internationally via the HiDive service, a platform significantly smaller than its main competitor, Crunchyroll.
Interestingly, HiDive will look to continue its incredible success on the 2022 Summer anime broadcasting slate. With it comes the view that the platform will aim to fund/license many of their simulcast series if they return for another season as a way to build an international community.
Made in Abyss Season 3 Release Date
While Season 3 of Made in Abyss is very certain to be greenlit by Studio Kinema Citrus, the release of a third chapter might be some years away.
The season 2 episode 12 finale of Made in Abyss covers till volume 10 of the original manga series, although only 11 complete volumes have been released as of December 2022.
Unfortunately, this means that Studio Kinema Citrus will have to wait till adequate source material is available. It will most likely be another four volumes before they can begin production on Season 3 of Made in Abyss.
About Made In Abyss
An orphaned girl named Riko lives in the Belchero Orphanage in the town of Orth.
The town surrounds a strange, giant hole going deep into the Earth, which is commonly called the Abyss.
The Abyss harbours artefacts and remnants of a civilization long gone, and is, therefore, the popular hunting spot for so-called Cave Raiders, who undertake arduous and dangerous descents into the mist-filled pit to recover whatever relics they can find.
Some legendary Cave Raiders earn the title of White Whistle, one of them being Riko’s mother, Lyza.
Riko’s longing in life is to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a White Whistle. One day she discovers a robot resembling a human boy in the Abyss and names him Reg.
Riko and her friends sneak Reg into Belchero and quickly welcome him into their close-knit group.
Sometime later, a balloon reaches the surface from the depths of the Abyss containing pages of discoveries made by Lyza, as well as a message for Riko stating she is waiting at the bottom of the Abyss.
Riko, determined to find her mother, bids farewell to her friends and departs to the Abyss with Reg as her companion.
