Non-Japanese otakus have it difficult when it’s time for an anime film to come out because it takes months for the film to be released globally, and avoiding spoilers becomes quite difficult.
But due to the recent worldwide popularity of anime, they have started coming to the global screen earlier, and some are even getting re-released for special events. The newest addition to this is Goodbye, Don Glees! and Macross Frontier anime films.
GKIDS will release Atsuko Ishizuka’s Goodbye, Don Glees! anime film in North America with English subtitles and an English-dub version this year.
It follows a trio of young boys, Roma, Toto, and Drop, who name their group ‘Don Glees.’ These are ordinary boys who like to play around and explore the hills and forest nearby but get wrongfully blamed for a forest fire.
Don Glees’ life-changing adventure begins when they go out to search for proof of their innocence.
The film premiered in Japan in February and will run at the Annecy Film Festival this year from 13-18 June. We can expect GKIDS to screen the movie globally by the end of 2022.
Coming to Macross Frontier, Fathom Events has announced that it will be running the Macross Frontier films in the US with English subtitles in June. The movies originally came out in 2009 and 2011, but the company is now re-releasing them in the US.
The first film, Macross Frontier: The False Songstress (Macross Frontier: Itsuwari no Utahime), will be out on June 16.
It follows three protagonists, Alto Saotome, Sheryl Nome, and Ranka Lee, in a love triangle while fighting the vicious Vajra alien race. Alto is a pilot for the Strategic Military Services, Sheryl is a famous singer, and Ranka is a budding idol who looks up to Sheryl.
They all meet each other at one of Sheryl’s concerts that became a center for a Vajra attack. After that, the trio’s lives are turned upside-down as the Vajra war begins, and their lives become intertwined.
Macross Frontier: The Wings of Goodbye (Macross Frontier: Sayonara no Tsubasa) is the sequel movie to False Songstress that follows up the previous film’s events. It will screen in the US on June 30.
This film winds up with the chaos created in the first movie as Sheryl is wrongfully put behind bars for being the one behind the Vajra attacks. Such an accusation makes Alto and Ranka do everything possible to get their friend justice and find the real culprit.
It also shows the end of the love triangle between the trio as Alto finally chooses the one he truly loves.
I love how two of the Macross franchise’s finest films are getting re-released with English subtitles so that more people can watch them.
The same goes for Goodbye, Don Glees! If it’s going to the Annecy, it must be really captivating.
