Machiko Kyō’s manga ‘Cocoon’ is set on a tropical southern island and focuses on San and her best friend Mayu, who attend the island’s finest all-girls school. War soon breaks out in their country, and the students of the school are immediately involved in the war effort.
San and Mayu witness their friends being slaughtered one by one as the violence escalates. The manga gained a lot of popularity as it showed the real horror of war from a kid’s point of view and how devastating it can be.
On Tuesday, Akita Shoten revealed that Machiko Kyō‘s Cocoon manga will be the inspiration for an anime that will debut on NHK in summer 2025. The animation is produced by Hitomi Tateno, a veteran Studio Ghibli animator, and the anime is produced by Sasayuri. The announcement made no mention of the anime’s format.
The key visual shows San covered in blood and everything around him on fire. Also, Kyō released the manga in 2010, 65 years after the end of World War II.
This is really exciting to see that the manga is being adapted to an anime for the 80th anniversary of the end of the Pacific War, and personally, I believe that the upcoming ‘Cocoon Wartime’ anime is going to be tearjerker and emotional.
