Lucifer Showrunners Discuss Prospects of Another Revival in the Future

It’s been almost a year since the popular DC/Vertigo series, Lucifer, came to an end. The showrunners, Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich, have revealed that they hope to do a revival of the show sometime in the future.

Lucifer is one of the most successful TV shows of all time and had a wild time during its 6-season-long run. The show starred Tom Ellis as the titular Lucifer, better known as the Devil. The character was loosely based on Lucifer from Neil Gaiman’s comic series, The Sandman.

The series followed Lucifer and his adventures after he lost interest in ruling Hell and began consulting the LAPD. After airing three seasons on broadcast television, Fox officially canceled Lucifer in May 2018. However, Netflix came in to save the series after a massive social media campaign demanding its return.

Lucifer went on to become one of Netflix’s most successful ventures. Initially, Season 5 was supposed to be the show’s last season. However, after Netflix and Warner Bros. TV came to a mutual agreement, the show was renewed for a sixth season.

This week, Lucifer Season 6 Blu-ray and DVD sets became available for purchase. In an interview with Screenrant celebrating the DVD release, showrunners Henderson and Modrovich said that they are open to the idea of doing a revival of the show in the future.

I mean, I hope so. We loved making the show, we loved working with these people. I think hopefully at some point, we can find a way to come back, or at least revisit or do something. It was such a great time, it’s such a great experience, and we love these people, so never say never.

My vote is for Lucifer The Musical, personally, on Broadway. If anybody wants to hashtag that, get that going. [Chuckles]

I say Lucifer The Animated Series.

The idea of bringing back Lucifer in an animated format has already been partially explored in one of the earlier episodes of the final season. In Season 6 Episode 3, titled “Yabba Dabba Do Me”, parts of the story were presented in an animated format when Chloe Decker and Lucifer entered Jimmy Barnes’ Hell loop.

A live-action spinoff or revival would be difficult to pull off while bringing the beloved character back in a different format could be much easier. This is especially true for the actors since they do not have to commit to the project for long and only lend their voices.

It would not be surprising to see Lucifer making a comeback, be it in an animated format, a live-action series, or a musical, considering the popularity of the character. Nostalgia and demands from fans have led to studios and networks doing countless revivals of popular shows.

If the creative team concerned can come up with a good story and concept, Lucifer can easily make a grand comeback, especially in a limited series. Even if the character does not get a standalone series, he can easily make appearances in other DC media.

In fact, many were expecting Tom Ellis to reprise his role as Lucifer in Netflix’s recent DC series, The Sandman. Although that did not happen, there’s no reason why Lucifer cannot make a comeback in another future project.

Time will tell whether Lucifer will return to the small screen. As of now, you can watch all six seasons of Lucifer on Netflix.
