The Disney+ limited series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, premiered on May 27, 2022. Starring Ewan McGregor as the titular character, the series follows Princess Leia (Vivien Lyra Blair) as she seeks rescue from the Galactic Empire with Obi-Wan’s help.
Eventually, Obi-Wan is faced with Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), who later turned to the dark side of the Force and became Darth Vader.
Original plans for Obi-Wan Kenobi were to be a spin-off film, however, it was reworked into a limited-run miniseries after Solo: A Star Wars Story failed to achieve the expected level of success.
The last episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi aired on Disney+ on June 22, 2022. According to director Deborah Chow, the series was conceived as “one big story with a beginning, middle, and end” and that “the approach has always been that it is one full story.”
Though the project was originally envisioned as a limited series, Kennedy says that if there is enough fan engagement and demand for a second season, Lucasfilm may consider it.
It has been stated by both Kennedy and Chow that they would do an Obi-Wan Kenobi season only if there was a “real reason for another one,” and if there was sufficient plot to make it work.
Read Kennedy’s views below:
“Well, frankly, we did set out to do that as a limited series. But I think if there’s huge engagement and people really want more Obi-Wan, we’ll certainly give that consideration because the fans, they speak to us. And if we feel like, ‘OK, there’s a real reason to do this; it’s answering the why then,’ then we’ll do it. But we’ll see.”
A Disney+ limited series such as Obi-Wan Kenobi has not been the first to potentially be converted into a series with multiple seasons. Moon Knight is another limited series commissioned by Marvel, similar to Kenobi.
There are rumors that both shows will get second seasons—given their immense popularity and the large following they’ve garnered on Disney+.
Despite the limited amount of time between the end of Kenobi and the start of A New Hope, not only the cast but also the fans are eager to learn more about Obi-Wan’s story. Even McGregor has indicated that he is looking forward to returning to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi if and when the opportunity arises.
Despite the lack of a concrete plan as yet, McGregor’s popularity in the Star Wars community has already prompted audiences to request a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Fans might need to wait around for an official confirmation for now, but Kennedy and Chow’s statements do give hope for a sequel.
