Loki season 2 has been a rollercoaster ride, beginning with Loki and the TVA dealing with the consequences of the death of He Who Remains.
As the gang tries to deal with all the branched timelines, it puts a lot of pressure on the TVA’s Temporal Loom, as it was meant to put the branches back together. All of this culminates into one of the most eventful endings in the MCU, marking a complete change in the status quo.
By the end of Loki season 2, Loki has turned into a completely new god and is integral to the stability of the MCU. He also discovers the “glorious purpose” in the episode, which is why the episode is titled such.
1. Loki Season 2 Finale Title “Glorious Purpose” Explained
The Loki season 2 finale is named Glorious Purpose as a reference to an iconic line from the 2012 MCU film Avengers. Loki said he was burnt by this line while claiming the Tesseract and Earth.
In the finale, Loki realizes that it is actually like to have a glorious purpose. He is inspired to let go of his current life and take up a new role in the multiverse as the living Temporal Loom.
2. What’s Loki’s New Role?
After spending centuries trying to fix the timelines using the Temporal Loom, Loki realizes that the problem cannot be solved as long as He Who Remains and the TVA continue existing like before. Therefore, Loki decides to break this circle and “change the equation”.
Loki destroys the Temporal Loom and takes its place as a new god, or a living Temporal Loom. Loki is now responsible for holding and maintaining the multiverse and all its branched timelines together. He has become the God of Stories, much like his rebirth in the original comics.
Although he was already a god, he is now a completely different kind of God. Loki’s stunt in the final episode has changed the entire status quo in the MCU, as he’s now the single most powerful man in the universe.
Loki now wears a new horned crown and sits on a throne, showing the magnanimity of this position. However, his deeds can have major consequences. He is now risking a huge multiversal war on hope of the destruction of the Sacred Timeline as designed by He Who Remains.
3. What is the Multiverse Tree ?
The Multiverse Tree is a tree that includes all the branched timelines in the MCU. It has roots and branches that are alive and growing, with Loki at its center, maintaining them.
After becoming the God of Stories, Loki turns the various branched timelines into a real multiverse tree. This is a reference to the Yggdrasil tree from Asgardian mythology and the Nine Realms.
The tree also hints at Loki’s upcoming role in Avengers: Secret Wars. In the original comics, there’s a story about “God Emperor Doom” ruling the remaining multiverse from a throne made out of the Asgardian Yggdrasil tree.
4. Who is the Mystery Character in the End of Loki S2 Finale?
In the last moments of the Loki season 2 finale, we see Ravonna Renslayer, the former TVA judge. She was removed after she tried to take control of the TVA in season 2, episode 5. All those who wanted to join her were murdered.
At the end of the finale, Rabonna wakes up in the Void at the End of Time. It seems like she is trapped there for an uncertain period.
We also see a mysterious purple glow after Ravonna wakes up. The purple glow a major temporal guardian called Alioth, whose power was harnessed by He Who Remains during the first Multiversal War.
Alioth is known for its all-consuming nature and destruction of everything that comes near the Void. Therefore, Ravonna’s future does not look safe at all.
5. The Role of the TVA in the MCU
After the turn of events in the Loki season 2 finale, the new goal of the TVA is to look for Kang’s variants. The TVA must find the remaining variants of He Who Remains, including the exiled one from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Mobius refers to the Quantumania Kang in the finale and confirms that the MCU’s primary reality is situated on Earth 616.
The TVA and the new status quo in the MCU will have an important role to play in the future of the MCU. As of now, the Multiverse Saga is continuing in Phase 6 and will come together in Secret Wars. So, Loki and the TVA will have a role in the film.
Agent Mobius is also expected to make an appearance in Deadpool 3, so the Loki characters are here to stay.
6. What Happens to Mobius and Sylvie?
Agent Mobius decides to take a break from work and visit his original life on the Sacred Timeline. He wants to take a look at everything the TVA is working to protect in the entire multiverse. After the major events of the finale, Mobius wants to take some time off and introspect.
Sylvie ends season 2 on a positive note, as she is looking forward to enjoying her newfound freedom. There are several possibilities for Sylvie’s future right now, given she tells Mobius that she will do “whatever she wants”.
Sylvie might continue working at MCD in Oklahoma or change her location. She also has He Who Remains’ temporal device so she can go to the various timelines whenever she wants.
