Marvel Studios’ Loki finally made its debut on Disney+ today with the first episode titled “Glorious Purpose,” ideally as a callback to the God of Mischief’s massive burden he’s been toting since 2011’s Avengers. The pilot was filled with details old and new, but interesting amongst them was the arrival of new characters, specifically Mobius M. Mobius.
Played by Owen Wilson, Mobius is introduced as a Time Variance Authority agent created by the Time Keepers to protect the sacred timeline, i.e., the proper flow of time. Wilson’s character opening sees him in 1549 France investigating the murders of the TVA’s Minutemen, who most likely were killed by a dangerous variant.
The sequence also reveals that Mobius is fluent in French and possibly all other languages in the timeline, as hinted by a fellow TVA investigator. However, their inspection is cut short when Mobius is informed of Loki’s apprehension and rushes back to the agency.
He saves Loki from being reset according to the orders of Judge RavonnaRenslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and instead seeks his help to investigate the rogue variant. Although Loki fights against Mobius’s attempts at better understanding his past actions and ambition for power, he ultimately gives in when he comes to know of his fate.
The TVA agent further reveals that he specializes in pursuing particularly dangerous variants and is bold enough to admit that Loki is merely a “pussycat” in his eyes. The episode is filled with similar sassy repartee between both characters and is delightful and entertaining to watch.
Wilson’s portrayal of Mobius has also appealed to audiences impressed by the on-screen chemistry between his character and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. Check out some of the reactions here:
Though Mobius is based on his Marvel comics counterpart, he has only made a handful of appearances throughout them. The character first emerged in Fantastic Four #353’s 1991 issue where Mobius was introduced as a junior manager at the TVA and clashes with the superhero team after they disrupt the timeline.
Based on this, a Fantastic Four cameo could be included in the show or even as part of a flashback into Mobius’ past.
Initially, he was genetically engineered as the identical clone of the TVA director Mr. Alternity and was based on real-life Marvel comics writer Mark Gruenwald. Mobius has also come across She-Hulk and Kang the Conqueror in the comics.
Nonetheless, the show will focus on his partnership with the show’s titular character as they try to take down this mysterious rogue variant. But with Mobius’ revelation that the perpetrator is, in fact, another variant of Loki, what lies ahead for this beloved duo remains to be seen.
