Loki Ending Explained: He Who Remains. For All Time. Always.

Marvel Studio’s Disney+ series Loki recently premiered its series finale, and it blew my mind.

So much has already happened in one episode, and I think it will only get harder to keep track of it all now that the Sacred Timeline has branched beyond repair. One might say that the “multiverse has gone mad.” (Yep, a Doctor Strange 2 pun for you)

First and foremost, we finally know the identity of the TVA’s creator. If you think it’s Kang the Conqueror, you’re half right. He Who Remains – a not-so-popular Marvel Comics character who is a variant of MCU’s Kang the Conqueror turns out to be the one beyond time.

But don’t worry, the time-traveling tyrant does appear in the finale. Just stay with me. Except for the beautifully choreographed fight between Loki and Sylvie, the entire episode was just talking, but it explained quite a bit. Moreover, Loki ep 6 sets up both season 2 and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

When Sylvie and Loki reach the Citadel at the End of Time, Miss Minutes tells them about all the beautiful things they can have if only they work with the man above and choose their desired place in the timeline. But they refuse, because of course.

Loki and Sylvie meet He Who Remains, and surprise, it’s Kang the Conqueror (or at least a variant of him). He Who Remains then goes into a monologue about how he was a scientist in the 31st century when he first found out about the “multiverse” and the “timeline.”

Fortunately, so did his multiversal counterparts. Soon they found each other out and started sharing their knowledge and wisdom. But not every variant was “good.” The shared knowledge was then weaponized and led to a massive multiverse war where everything would eventually be obliterated.

Sylvie and Loki

That’s when the variant in question, He Who Remains, found a sentinel being born from the rift in the space-time continuum – Alioth. It was cable of consuming time and realities for breakfast! He Who Remains harnessed Alioth’s power, isolated his timeline from the multiverse, and made an organization to keep things in check. Thus began the Time Variance Authority and The Sacred Timeline.

Moments later, he admits that he only knew everything up to a point, and that point passes as they were talking. He removes his TemPad from his wrist, leaving his fate up to the two variants standing in front of them and a little bit too thrilled to meet his possible end.

He Who Remains gives Loki and Sylvie a choice – either kill him and unleash his evil variants into a multiverse of madness (ah! did it again) or take his place and govern the Sacred Timeline. Loki finds some truth in his words, while Sylvie doesn’t.

In the span of a brawl, heartfelt sentences, and a kiss, Loki and Sylvie fight and make up as Loki tries to explain how the consequences are far too great to risk everything they know. Sylvie, unfortunately, doesn’t believe him.

But it’s just like Loki said. It was a relationship between Loki – the man who can’t be trusted and Sylvie (Loki) – the woman who doesn’t know how to trust someone. So she ends up pushing Loki through a Time Door into the TVA using His TemPad.

Time-Keepers

Sylvie launches towards the man responsible for everything wrong that has happened to her and plunges her blade into his chest. As He sits there while his life drains from him, He Who Remains looks at Sylvie and promises that he’ll see her soon. Outside the window, the timeline breaks as threads ripple off of it… A multiverse of madness…here we go.

If you think that was all, it’s not. Because it’s Kang time! Remember when I said everyone’s not the same anymore? So, Loki runs around, trying to find Mobius, and when he does, he tells him about the Multiversal War. But, just a tiny hiccup, Mobius and Hunter B-15 don’t know/recognize the God of Mischief anymore.

So, with a defeated look on his face, Loki turns to the Time Keepers statue area, which now has just one man’s statue – and it’s He Who Remains.

But why would He Who Remains make his own statue at the heart of TVA? People usually can’t do such things after they die. The caveat here is that we’re not in the Sacred Timeline; it’s the twisted multiverse. The statue that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki saw was most likely the evil variant of He Who Remains – Kang the Conqueror.

On a brighter note, the mid-credits scene provides reassurance as a stamp imprint with bold letters, ‘LOKI WILL RETURN IN SEASON 2.’ God! I can’t wait for Doctor Strange 2!
