Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most popular Nickelodeon cartoons, and Netflix’s announcement in 2018 about making a live-action series was one of the trending subjects that year. Since then, the series cast has slowly grown, securing an authentically appropriate ensemble over the past few months.
Most of the major and side characters have already been cast, and production is underway, but there are still some last-minute cast additions. Knight Edge Media reported that three news actors joined the cast and will play a trio in Jet’s Freedom Fighters.
Taylor Lam Wright (Resident Alien) will play The Duke, the team’s youngest member. Newcomer non-binary actor Wes Valarao joined the cast as Smellerbee, the only girl of the group often mistaken as another boy; the character will still identify as a female in the live-action series. Nathanial Kong has joined the team as Longshot, the silent but intense teen who tagged along with Smellerbee for most of the animated series.
Longshot, Smellerbee, and The Duke were some of the more prominent side characters in Volume 1 of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The young trio worked with their leader, Jet, to rid the world of the Fire Nation, and though their goal was innocent and just, Jet’s corrupt methods soon turned the Gang against them.
These Earth Kingdom refugees had no bending abilities but were still a force to be reckoned with. After Jet’s death, we don’t know what happened to his Freedom Fighters in the series, so maybe the live action will have some answers.
The Freedom Fighter trio will appear alongside their leader, who Sebastian Amoruso will play in the eight-episode live-action series. Considering the show wrapped up filming last year, this report is late, but it’s good to put a face to all these characters. The show is currently in post-production, but Netflix has not confirmed a release date.
