Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is out now in theatres and good things are being said all around! I imagined that dealing with heavy themes such as T’Challa’s death and Wakanda’s feud with Namor would leave no space for any cameos.
But that was not the case! The film makes sure we get our deserved thrill of seeing some familiar faces on screen.
The main cameos in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever are Contessa de Fontaine, Killmonger, and T’Challa’s son, Toussaint.
In case you missed catching some of these cameos/surprise appearances, here’s a complete list:
1. Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine
That name sure is a handful, but we can call her just Director de Fontaine, now that she has taken over as head of the CIA. The only bigger reveal than this is the fact that she was once married to Everett Ross!
Instead of her usual small cameos, Fontaine appears in multiple scenes, overseeing the mining of vibranium and keeping a track of Wakanda’s interactions with Namor.
Fontaine’s appearance in Black Panther 2 was quite the surprise, especially with the rumors that she’ll be the one to orchestrate Thunderbolts. The anti-hero team is expected to be sent on a mission against their will, and possibly against the good guys.
Remember, it’s Fontaine who recruits Yelena to kill Clint—so whatever she’s doing as the CIA director cannot be good news.
2. Killmonger
I’ll accept any reason to have Michael B. Jordan on my screen, but him appearing to Shuri in the ancestral plane did give the film a different depth.
Shuri had not yet been able to come to terms with her grief. Namor killing her mother ignites her anger and frustration even more.
While it would’ve been nice to have one of her family members pacify her in the ancestral plane, KIllmonger appears to play the devil’s advocate. His ideas may not be all right, but he does push Shuri to be unapologetic and fierce.
With all the troubles she is facing, this proved to be the right attitude to invoke.
3. T’Challa, Son of T’Challa
This was a surprise appearance that no one could even fathom! The mid-credits scene introduces Toussaint, also known as T’Challa (junior?), son of T’Challa and Nakia.
Toussaint is an original character created for the MCU. He has no similarities or connections to T’Challa’s son in the comics, Azari.
While Shuri currently carries the mantle of the Black Panther, it’s possible that many years down the line, Toussaint will take it over from her. Keep an eye out!
4. Trevor Noah as Griot
Trevor Noah voiced Shuri’s AI Griot in the first film and reprises his role in Wakanda Forever as well.
If you didn’t know, a griot is someone who is part of a traveling pack of poets, musicians, and/or storytellers in West Africa. Their job is to preserve the tradition of oral history and pass it down to the next generation.
5. Richard Schiff
The West Wing legend appears as part of one of the delegations in the UN meeting.
6. Lake Bell as Dr. Graham
Lake Bell makes a guest appearance as Dr. Graham, who’s overseeing vibranium mining in the Atlantic Ocean. Fun fact: She voices Black Widow in What If…?
7. Anderson Cooper
Anderson Cooper is a CNN reporter in real life and supposedly plays himself in the scene where he is reporting T’Challa’s death on live TV.
Also, did you catch the little Easter egg of “Scott Lang is writing a memoir” on the news scroll?
8. About Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is an upcoming American superhero film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will serve as the sequel to Black Panther (2018) and will be the 30th film in the MCU. The film is being written and directed by Ryan Coogler.
Wakanda grieves the loss of their King T’Challa as the nation deals with opening up their technology to the world. But apart from the diplomatic agencies’ onslaught, Wakanda must face yet another danger as the king of Talcon, an underwater nation like DC’s Atlantis, Namor, has declared war on Wakanda.
Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, and Angela Bassett will star in the film, which will premiere on November 11, 2022.
