Henry Cavill passes his swords and mantle as Geralt of Rivia following Season 3 of The Witcher to Liam Hemsworth as he takes leave from the Netflix original. The Witcher fandom drowns in remorse as they watch the actor depart from the role of a lifetime due to other commitments.
Based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books of the same name, the show was a hit from the time it premiered on the platform in 2019. Netflix announced Season 3 months before Season 2 premiere in September 2021, and now, the show is confirmed to progress after that, but with a major casting difference.
Netflix took to Twitter, and Cavill took to Instagram to alert the fandom that Cavill will depart from the show after Season 3, and from Season 4 onwards, Liam Hemsworth will play the titular character.

My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.
The DCU actor also wishes luck to his replacement and tells him to enjoy “diving in” to the role to bring a new aspect to the beloved character.
Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.
The news comes at the heels of Cavill’s official announcement about his return to the DCU as Superman, leading viewers to believe his gig as the superhero won’t allow him time to focus on the TV series.
But even if playing Superman were not on the table, Cavill has many upcoming projects that would have only delayed the Witcher’s production, which has been an area of complaint for the fandom.
Apart from that, the show’s deviation from the original content of the book series and game has led the fandom to believe Cavill’s exit was of his own volition, and not just because he simply had too much on his plate. Cavill was an ardent fan of the game and thus left the show before it strayed further from the beauty of the game.
Hemsworth had previously worked on a project with a big fandom when he starred in the Hunger Games film series and thus knows how important it is to stick to the version of the character viewers most appreciate.
The Witcher has had a successful run-on Netflix since its premiere, audiences and critics alike have been wowed by the show time after time. The show follows a savage and brave protector of the Continent, Geralt of the Rivia, who slays the monsters no one else dares to face alone.
Though everyone hasn’t warmed up to the idea of saying goodbye to the actor, who brought the role of Geralt of Rivia alive and understood his assignment perfectly, the curiosity to see Hemsworth fill Cavill’s shoes is also rising.
As for us, we are definitely excited to see Liam Hemsworth’s portrayal of the White Wolf,though the lingering sadness of seeing Henry Cavill leave is here to stay for a while.
