After many speculations on who will be playing the coveted role of Batgirl in the upcoming HBO Max movie, a decision has come through — it is none other than In The Heights’ Leslie Grace.
Grace’s confirmation as Barbara Gorden in the live-action movie that will exclusively debut on HBO Max came via The Wrap.
Quite a few names have been in the running for the role: Zoey Deutch, Isabela Merced, and Haley Lu Richardson. And the pressure has been equally high to find the right fit.
As Batgirl has been a very popular character, there have been many live-action versions of her, right from Yvonne Craig’s portrayal in the 60s to Savannah Welch in 2018’s Titans. The baton has now been passed forward to Grace.
Fans were expecting to see mentions of Batgirl back in Birds of Prey itself, as the superhero helped to found it.
It is yet to be seen if an encounter between Grace’s Batgirl and Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary and Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress will be possible.
We first meet Batgirl in Detective Comics #359 in1967 created by William Dozier, Julius Schwartz, Gardner Fox, and Carmine Infantino.
Her civilian persona is Barbara Gordon, daughter of Commissioner Gordon, who worked at the Gotham City Public Library. But in the shadows of the dark, one would find her prowling as a vigilante.
For a while, Barbara Gordon took off her mask as Batgirl after being paralysed in an altercation in Batman: The Killing Joke. She would work as a hacker and computer whizz Oracle before recovering and going back to her duties as Batgirl.
Now, the HBO Batgirl movie itself has been in the works since 2017 and initially had Josh Whedon signed on to write. Eventually, he stepped down and production went into a lull.
In May 2021, it gained momentum, as it was revealed that Adil Al Arbi and Bilall Fallah will be directing Batgirl, having worked on Ms Marvel together as directors and executive producers. Joining them will be Birds of Prey screenwriter, Christina Hodson.
The word going around is that the release is tentatively scheduled for 2022-23. Now with Leslie Grace in the lead, it may not be long before the rest of the production comes together.
