However, just as the celebratory atmosphere was reaching its peak, a sudden and devastating blow shattered the hopes of the entire global anime community, leaving them in mourning.

Japanese manga comic creator Akira Toriyama, best known for his ‘Dragon Ball’ series, died on March 1, 2024, from a blood clot in his brain.

Mr Toriyama’s death was confirmed by his manga and design production studio, Bird Studio, and Capsule Corporation Tokyo.

The studio said that he passed away due to acute subdural hematoma. This is a condition where blood accumulates between the skull and the brain’s surface. Only a few of his family and friends attended his funeral.

The studio added that he left behind a legacy of many manga titles and works of art for the world to cherish. They also expressed gratitude to those who supported him, enabling him to continue his creative pursuits for over 45 years.

Besides the famous ‘Dragon Ball’ series, his other creations, which span more than 45 years, include Dr. Slump, Sand Land, and the character designs for the Dragon Quest video games.

The passing away of Toriyama has led to an overwhelming display of condolences from other artists who appreciated his work. Eiichiro Oda expressed that Toriyama’s manga demonstrated how it could be enjoyable for children and adults and inspired countless creators to pursue manga as a profession.

Naruto’s author, Masashi Kishimoto, was greatly inspired by Toriyama’s work, reading his stories from grade school to college. Fans also pay tribute and sympathize with Mr. Toriyama for creating characters that have become a part of their childhood memories.

Mr Torimiya was a legendary figure who single-handedly started the entire Shounen revolution with the anime ‘Dragon Ball.’ We grew up watching his creations, and his passing has left us heartbroken. Though he may not be with us any longer, his legacy shall continue forever. May his soul rest in peace.
