Legally Blonde 3 Will See Elle Woods As A Working Mom In Her 40s

It has been more than two years since it was announced that Reese Witherspoon would be returning as Elle Woods, the badass lawyer with an elite sense of fashion, in Legally Blonde 3.

Since then, besides a few basic details, not much had been revealed. However, MGM’s Pamela Abdy has teased that the threequel will see the character deal with being a working mom in her 40s.

In an interview with THR, when asked about updates on the film, Abdy said,

It’s really happening. Mindy Kaling and Dan [Goor] are writing it now for Reese to star. Reese and Lauren Neustadter are producing with Marc Platt. We’re all developing it together. What does Elle Woods look like at 40? Elle is a mom with a thriving career. We’re looking forward to seeing the script come in sometime in the first quarter.

The film was originally supposed to arrive around valentine’s day last year but was pushed to May of 2022. It was then announced that Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor were working on the script for Legally Blonde 3.

The first film came out in 2001 and became the cult classic that challenged the “dumb-pretty-blonde-girl” trope. The film follows Elle Woods, who enters Harvard Law School when her ex-boyfriend breaks up because she isn’t smart enough to be with him.

We later see Elle become her own person, form an unusual friendship with Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge) and eventually have a way better love interest – Emmett Richmond (Luke Wilson).

The sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, & Blonde, saw Elle fighting for animal rights and moving to Washington D.C. to pass a bill banning animal testing. Elle and Emmett also get married in the sequel.

Coolidge and Wilson have both previously expressed their desires to be in the third film. When further asked about Wilson’s return, Abdy said,

It’s definitely our hope that he will return when we are ready to make it.

Seeing how the film is still in its pre-production stage, it wouldn’t be a surprise of its release date is further pushed back. Currently, Legally Blonde 3 is scheduled to arrive in theatres on May 22, 2022.

The third film will revolve around Elle Woods being a successful lawyer while managing her work and personal life as a parent in her 40s. It is expected to release in 2023.
