The clip gives a sneak peek at a “revolutionary idea” in the new episode as Benson’s colleagues discuss whether rape can be treated as a hate crime.

Benson argues it’s about time they made some changes as sexual assault can be charged with hate crime where the perpetrator preys on the young woman, who’s targeted based on her gender.

The title, as well as the premise of the episode, is a reference to the Brock Turner case. Despite being caught in the act of raping an unconscious woman, Turner was deemed to be a “promising young man” by the judge and was sentenced to merely six months in prison, out of which he only served three.

As the series often uses stories based on real crimes and fictionalizes them by changing some details, the new episode seems to have picked up this case while tackling the question of charging rape as a hate crime.

The trailer was stitched in with Law & Order: Hate Crimes’ newest episode’s promo clip, hinting at the possibility of a tie-in episode.

The series has kept a steady following since 1999, with the show’s success being credited to showrunner Dick Wolf’s willingness to tackle headlines and include cases that received a lot of attention in the media.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit S23E15, Promising Young Gentlemen, will air on NBC on March 10, 2022, and premiere a day after on Peacock.
