2023 will witness another Spider-Man spinoff brought to Marvel fans by Sony Pictures. Hoping that it will not be an unsatisfactory experience like Morbius (2022) was, fans are relieved to hear Aaron Taylor-Johnson confirm that the upcoming film will be different from Marvel movies.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson will play the titular role in Kraven the Hunter, joined by other Spider-Man heroes. It thus makes the film the live-action debut of several Spider-Man villains previously spotted in comics, video games, and animated shows.
Aaron Taylor Johnson’s Sergei Kravinoff/Kraven is accompanied by other Spider-Man characters like Ariana DeBose’s Calypso, Fred Hechinger’s Chameleon, and Christopher Abbott’s The Foreigner. Other actors on the cast list are Russel Crowe, Levi Miller, and Alessandro Nivola.
The film will capture the origins of Kraven the Hunter and why he went after Spider-Man to prove himself as a big-game hunter. Johnson has signed on to be Kraven for the upcoming 2023 film in addition to a few other films.
In his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stated that the film is shot in one location (London, England) almost entirely. He added that this significantly sets it apart from other Marvel movies, which are majorly acted out on sound stages and tweaked using VFX.
Kraven being shot entirely on location will make all the difference. It’s going to add something really beautiful to our personal story. It also sets Kraven apart from that Marvel stage look. This character needs to be in the real world. It’s important for the authenticity of the story. When you’re running on streets barefoot, you take in those elements and play within them.
This does indeed set the film apart from other Marvel/Disney films, where everything is set in more cosmic and outer-space locations. The “authenticity” that Johnson talks about will be a highlight in placing the movie on a different level from other Disney films.
