MCU’s high-budget film Eternals did not give Marvel the box office hit they had hoped for with a new superhero team starring many Hollywood big names. Though now, we may have some insight into one of those characters’ return.
The post-credits scene of the 2021 film teased the return of MCU’s Blade in an off-screen voiceover, but that’s not it. Fans got a glimpse of the Ebony Blade in the short clip, and the post-credits scene introduced Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman as the MCU’s possible Black Knight.
Black Knight, a Marvel Comics character, is the wielder of the mystical Ebony Blade, a sword created with one sole purpose, slaying. The Ebony Blade was designed to be borne by a swordsman with a costly condition—if the owner does not use the sword to spill blood, their immortality will be extinguished.
Though the end credits spelled a return for the Eternals, no sequel was announced by Marvel at SDCC 2022 or the D23 Expo. But now Kit Harrington, who played Dane Whitman in the 2021 film, has broken his silence about his MCU future.
In a conversation with Josh Horowitz, Kit Harrington explained he has no information of any development for his character currently, but he is hopeful of returning to the MCU.
I don’t know much about what they’re planning. And you know, I hope to be involved in future stuff, with that character, with Dane Whitman, and that he might go on and be the thing that everyone quotes at me in the street. But I honestly don’t know. I don’t know what their plans are. I know they’re going into Phase 5, but that’s all.
The Game of Thrones actor only played Dane Whitman for a short screen time, and his superhero persona was only teased but never shown in the film. But with 2023 bringing Blade back with his solo movie, Kit Harrington might have a shot at returning to the MCU.
With Marvel always being secretive about their big-time surprises, we can expect Dane Whitman’s Black Knight to return to the MCU. The hopes for this comeback are especially high as many old-time characters are making their comeback into the MCU lately, and this trend seems to have come to stay.
