Jennifer Lopez is set to be the star of the musical adaptation of Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel Kiss of the Spider Woman. 

The book was first made into a movie in 1985 and starred William Hurt, Raul Julia, and Sonia Braga. The story was later adapted into a Broadway musical in 1993.

Almost half a century after the novel’s publication, a movie version of the story is in development. Directed by Bill Condon, the film will star Jennifer Lopez as the protagonist Aurora. Besides Jennifer, no other cast member is confirmed at this time.

Jennifer Lopez made her acting debut in 1986 with a minor role in My Little Girl. Since then, her acting career has had its fair share of highs and lows. While she’s starred in critically acclaimed creatives like Selena and Hustlers, she’s also starred in films like 2003’s Gigli, considered one of the worst films ever made. 

However, Condon has had a much more stable film career and has co-written screenplays of critically acclaimed films like The Greatest Showman and Chicago. He was also the director of the widely acclaimed 2006 film Dreamgirls featuring Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson. 

While Lopez’s acting resume may not be the greatest in the world, her performance in classics like Hustlers shows she can flourish under the right director. 

Thus, we hope that Condon’s prowess in handling famous singers as actors brings out the star inside Jennifer Lopez, and we get to see a dream actor-director pair form in Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Set in Brazilian prison during the military dictatorship, the book centers on a dialogue between two very different cellmates, a hardened leftist revolutionary and an apolitical transwoman.

The story utilizes metafictional and film-within-a-film elements, as the latter regales the former with retellings of an old movie, whose themes mirror those of the characters.
