Rumors have been floating around that Microsoft is venturing further into the world of cloud gaming. The company is developing a streaming stick which will offer Xbox Cloud Gaming, similar to the Chromecast or Google Stadia.
A code name “Keystone” appeared in a leaked Xbox OS list on Twitter.
Fans suggest it is the pocket-friendly dongle which is being developed.
Keystone could run a modified version of Windows or Xbox OS. The device will utilize a modernized HDMI streaming device that allows Xbox Game Pass and its cloud gaming service.
A Microsoft spokesperson explained their company’s purpose of flexible boundaries for accessing Xbox content while still developing Keynote,
Our vision for Xbox Cloud Gaming is unwavering, our goal is to enable people to play the games they want, on the devices they want, anywhere they want. As announced last year, we’ve been working on a game-streaming device, codenamed Keystone, that could be connected to any TV or monitor without the need for a console.
Microsoft Spokesperson
Microsoft has been developing Keystone for a couple of years. However, it clearly takes some time to fine-tune the device before releasing it for the audience.
The device will be along the likes of the NVIDIA Shield. The Shield is a simplistic and powerful 2nd-gen streaming device, it uses Android TV and offers about 5000+ applications.
Keystone might be aiming for something similar but instead, the Windows OS will be the wiser choice compared to Android as it would allow Microsoft to offer its own media streaming apps like Microsoft Movies & TV.
Microsoft has also hinted at bringing TV apps for Xbox Cloud Gaming.
A low-cost streaming device is a viable business model as Microsoft pushes to bring Xbox Game Pass to more users who might be less invested in gaming.
Any dates or details for the Keystone launch are undisclosed yet. Future rumors might give us a hint. For now, you can look forward to the Xbox Bethesda Showcase scheduled for June 12, 2022.
