Co-Creator Keegan-Michael Key Addresses Chances of Key & Peele Revival

Keegan-Michael Key, the co-creator of Key and Peele, addressed the chances of its revival almost seven years after the popular sketch show went off the air in 2015.

The sketch comedy series, created by Key and Jordan Peele for Comedy Central back in 2012, consisted mainly of pre-taped skits starring the titular duo. It went on for 53 episodes before coming to a close in 2015.

Key and Peele received a Peabody Award and two Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, for its creative sketches about a multitude of societal issues. The iconic duo has also come together frequently for other projects after Key and Peele ended. Some popular ones include Toy Story 4, Keanu, and the upcoming Wendell and Wild.

On an individual level, Peele has gone on to revamp the horror genre with movies like Get Out, Us, and Nope, while Key has been a highly sought-after voice actor for his comedic talents. His works include Disney’s Pinocchio and Jude Aptow’s The Bubble. However, with their OG show’s popularity constantly growing on OTT platforms, many have been anticipating a potential revival for some time now.

In a recent interview with SlashFilm, Key admitted that he and Peele had thought about a revival, but that is not something they were considering anytime soon.

Read what Key had to say:

It’s something that is in the back of our brains sometimes, but right now, we’re just happy to be working on the stuff that we’re working on. When I say ‘it’s in the back,’ I mean it’s way, way in the back, yeah.”

Key’s comments aren’t what fans expected to hear, but they don’t spell doom on the chances of a revival. The duo is just preoccupied with too many other projects right now. Key has upcoming roles in Wonka movies and Super Mario, while Peele is likely busy manufacturing ideas for his next feature film.

It is fascinating to see that both the protagonists have expanded their careers beyond Key and Peele, but it also leads to some disappointment among fans of the show.

The duo was heavily involved in all factions of creating Key and Peele, including writing, directing, producing, and starring in the show. So, signing up for the revival is a significant commitment, something that the duo doesn’t have time for right now.

For those dreaming of a revival of Key and Peele, perhaps the stop-motion film Wendell & Wild due for release in October is a good chance to quench the thirst.
