Kevin Feige Explains How the MCU Will Address “Superhero Fatigue”

2022 was a good year for superhero films, and the two big franchises in the superhero genre, the MCU & DCU, are gearing up for even bigger projects. 2023 alone will mark the DCU’s fresh start after Safran-Gunn releases the new slate, and the MCU’s Phase Five will kick off in February 2023.

But according to a recent survey conducted by Fandom, plenty of viewers of the superhero fandom are growing weary of the continuous churning in the genre. Their main concern lies with keeping things fresh and exciting while keeping the new screen adaptations as close to the source as possible.

In a guest appearance on The Movie Business Podcast, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige answered what the MCU plans to do to ensure that this “superhero fatigue” doesn’t imply to Marvel’s mass-media franchise. Read his full quote below:

But another way to do that is adapting them into different genres and what types of movies we want to make. And I, from sitting at USC, probably Semester 2 before your screenwriting class, Jason, and sitting in Cinema 101 and being exposed to so many different types of film that I said, ‘I want to make all of these. I don’t want to make just one kind of movie. I want to make all kinds of movies.’

And I found that if we tell the story right, and we adapt them in a way that the audience still, knock on wood so far, is following us along 22-plus years later, we can tell any type of movie that share two things: The Marvel Studios logo above the title and a seed of an idea from our publishing history. – Kevin Feige

Feige has no intentions of slowing down since he has planned multiple projects in the MCU spanning till at least 2025. Phase Five will commence in 2023 with Ant-Man 3 on the big screens and with Secret Invasion rumored to release sometime in mid-2023 on Disney+.

Phase 5 will span across multiple shows and films, and soon we’ll even have Phase 6, which we know includes Avengers: Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Feige has kept most of the Phase 6 titles under wraps, but we bet it contains some X-Men characters and the Fantastic Four reboot.

The MCU will not slow down in the face of superhero fatigue and will make sure fans are rid of this tiredness soon, with Phase 5 & 6 wiping their concerns away.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an American media franchise and shared universe centered on a series of superhero films and TV series, independently produced by Marvel Studios and based on characters that appear in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

The franchise includes comic books, short films, television series, and digital series. The shared universe, much like the original Marvel Universe in comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters.
