Kevin Feige On MCU Phase 4 Future And Continuing ‘The Legacy Of Wakanda’

Marvel boss, Kevin Feige, has teased the future of the MCU Phase 4 in a new video. The video interview is divided into parts as Rotten Tomatoes released part 2 a week after releasing the first part of the interview.

Feige reflected on the Phase 4 stuff that we have already seen in the first part of the interview. In the second part, Feige delved more into the upcoming projects, including Shang-Chi, Eternals, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever & more Phase 4 projects.

Feige has emphasized how much the studio wishes to bring more comic characters to life and on the big screen.

The comic books have a myriad of characters that can further expand the MCU, and Feige called Loki as the starting point to introduce a larger narrative while also focusing on the character’s personal journey.

According to Feige, Marvel had ideas for exploring stories about characters like Shang-Chi about 20 years ago,

It’s a great story of a young man that realizes his father is essentially one of the world’s greatest super-villains, one of the world’s greatest criminals: How do you process that? How do you deal with that as a child, and how do you evolve beyond that? And the heroism needed to break free of that and grow beyond that.

Kevin recalled the Ten Rings organization as the one that kidnapped Tony Stark in Iron Man, and it was inspired by a character called the Mandarin in the comics.

However, introducing Mandarin, such a complex character, in Iron Man didn’t seem right as it would take away the focus from Tony Stark.

Fans went apeshit when they saw The Abomination fighting Wong in the final trailer for Shang-Chi. Feige confirmed that it really is them and called it ‘a fun thing to have a character that we haven’t had on screen in over a decade show up again in the MCU.’

While talking about Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao, he said that she had expressed interest in Marvel many years ago.

Zhao came in with a pitch that got into visuals and had a unique viewpoint for all of the characters that would be The Eternals.

As for Marvel Studios’ involvement in the Spider-Man movies, he mentioned that they focus on looking at the bright side and saying, ‘Wouldn’t it just be more fun if we just kept doing it? Let’s not get business or politics in the way.’

Director Sam Raimi was the prominent architect for superhero movies with his early Spider-Man trilogy, and now that Raimi is working on the Doctor Strange sequel.

Feige spoke highly of him and said it was exciting to have the ‘Sam Raimi stamp on Doctor Strange in Multiverse on Madness.’

Chad Boseman, who portrayed Black Panther in the first film, sadly passed away in August last year.

So the discussions to carry on his legacy in the MCU came down to ‘continuing the legacy of Wakanda and continuing with that storyline in a very meaningful, respectful, and yet still hopeful and fun and exciting way.’

Feige concluded that Phase 4 was all about moving past Endgame and having new beginnings, and delivering new stories moving forward.

We don’t take our foot off the gas, we don’t take anything for granted, and we all work extremely hard to deliver.

The pandemic caused a lot of production delays. Still, nonetheless, MCU has picked up speed and so far have already released three Disney+ series with WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki (which will drop its series finale on July 14), and the much-anticipated Black Widow solo film, which were all well received by fans and critics alike.

About Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an American media franchise and shared universe centered on a series of superhero films and TV series, independently produced by Marvel Studios and based on characters that appear in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

The franchise includes comic books, short films, television series, and digital series. The shared universe, much like the original Marvel Universe in comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters.
