If you are a manga lover, then often, you must have marveled at the highly detailed illustrations and wondered just how the manga was planned.
So, let’s take a deep dive into the world of mangaka with Yabako Sandrovich, the creator of Kengan Ashura.
Being an author of such a successful series, he will provide insights into not only manga serialization but also his motivation to create every day!
Yabako Sandrovich is the author of “Kengan Ashura” as well as the “How Heavy are the Dumbbells you Lift?” manga.
Many would like to ask the mangaka, “How did you become a manga author?” To this, Sandrovich has replied that he never consciously aimed to be one!
He was publishing his manga on a personal website and was scouted by his current editor. However, since he had already quit his previous company, he had nothing to lose. So he took up the challenge of manga creation.
We are also given a glimpse at what Sandrovich has learned throughout his experience as a mangaka. He has never been an assistant or a teacher, and thus he has taught himself everything that he does.
However, he does say that his main mantra is “To eliminate unnecessary elements as much as possible.” He further clarifies that the figures in the manga should be simplified as much as possible.
Since Dandrovich works with illustrators, he specifies the background but does not draw them. Thus, simplifying figures is what helps in speedy completion. He also tries not to interfere with the illustrators as much as possible until he wants a specific scene to look according to his vision.
So what is the charm of being a mangaka for Kengan Ashura’s creator? He looks forward to seeing just how the manuscript changes after the illustration procedures are over. He enjoys reading the complete manga almost as much as the series’ fans.
Sensei has also provided some top tips for up-and-coming manga authors and those who dream of getting their works serialized one day!
- Focus and research what you find interesting rather than forcing yourself into a genre you aren’t good at.
- Meet the deadlines.
- Take care of your health.
- Have a distraction or a hobby that is not related to making manga.
I hope that Sandrovich’s quick but elaborate instructions were helpful to anyone who was on their way to pursue this career.
