Ken Wakui’s New Manga to Make Digital Debut on Viz

After the immense popularity of his manga Tokyo Revengers (March 2017 – November 2022), mangaka Ken Wakui returned with a fresh series that is expected to evoke the same level of enthusiasm. This new series maintained his distinctive style of merging sci-fi elements with delinquent storylines. While Tokyo Revengers featured time traveling, Wakui’s new series shifted gears by bringing superpowers to the world of delinquents and mob families.

During its first few seasons, Tokyo Revengers, the delinquent fantasy series, was the talk of the town in the anime community. Unfortunately, the fan base was left in chaos as the manga’s popularity dropped during its last arc. Nevertheless, Wakui did not abandon the delinquent genre. In fact, he added a twist and made a comeback with it.

On Friday, Viz Media announced their upcoming summer 2025 print releases and new licenses, along with digital exclusives set for spring 2025. One of the thrilling new releases is Astro Royale (Negai no Astro) by Ken Wakui, a blend of ‘superpowers × outlaws’ in Wakui’s signature style.

What Does Astro Royale Have to Offer

Astro Royale follows Hibaru, the heir of the Yotsuguri family, as he copes with his father’s death. On top of the new responsibilities he now has to take on, he has to deal with twelve adopted siblings, all eager to become the head of the family in place of their father. As the competition for the next leader of the Yotsurugi gang in Asakusa intensifies, to make things a bit more complicated, a meteor shower goes haywire on the eve of the funeral when one lands and grants people special abilities.

Hibaru Yotsurugi, the heart of the series, is the only blood-related son of Kongo Yotsurugi. The series pans out as a fierce battle for the throne of Asakusa among Kongo Yotsurugi’s sons. Power struggles, if done right, can turn your story for the better. Although the power struggle this manga sets up may seem generic, Wakui sprinkles some supernatural spices into this mix.

Superpowers bestowing meteorite crashed into Japan unexpectedly, and well, you are right to think it includes the Yotsurugi family members. Therefore, we are ready to see Tokyo Revengers meets My Hero Academia in Astro Royale, potentially only the best of both worlds.

Several manga fans have already pointed out that Astro Royale is similar to other Shonen series, but many found it to be quite refreshing. The majority of present manga and anime that are well-liked have a darker tone. With titles like Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Hell’s Paradise, known as the “dark trio,” currently in the rage, a story like Astro Royale feels like a refreshing change. While Astro Royale is not afraid to delve into a serious and violent tone, it still possesses a considerable amount of heart and soul.

At its core, the story revolves around family. The protagonist aims to support the vulnerable, challenge the powerful, and ultimately protect his father’s legacy. Wakui establishes a solid base for a potentially epic story that blends family conflicts, organized crime, and superpowers with the character designs faithful to Wakui’s style.

Astro Royale is a fascinating mashup of well-known Yakuza tropes with sci-fi elements like superpowers. With the world now potentially filled with superpowers and the Yotsuguri family at the epicenter of the narrative, many questions remain unanswered. What can be said for sure is that the obstacles faced by the Yotsuguri siblings will really test their bond of brotherhood.

We just hope that Wakui learns from his previous mistakes with Tokyo Revengers and doesn’t repeat them in Astro Royale, because then there is no stopping Astro Royale from becoming a hot-selling manga in Shonen.
