Keira Knightley recently discussed the possibility of reprising her role as Elizabeth Swann in an upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean sequel. However, the actor seems to be done with the franchise as of now.
Knightley originally portrayed Swann in the 2003 film The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and went on to star in the following two sequels with co-stars Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom.
Throughout the series, Swann’s character evolved from a helpless damsel in distress to a capable pirate in her own right. Swann was last seen briefly in the 2017 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
During the premiere of her latest movie, Boston Strangler, Keira Knightley was interviewed by ET and asked about the possibility of her character Elizabeth Swann returning to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
The question was in reference to producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s recent comments about his desire to bring Johnny Depp back to the series. Knightley expressed satisfaction with the character’s departure, saying that Swann left in a fantastic way.

Her response indicates that she is content with her character’s fate and isn’t really considering reprising the role.
Since its first release in 2003, the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series has produced five films. Despite their often-extravagant budgets, the franchise has consistently proved to be lucrative at the box office.
As of now, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have generated more than $4.5 billion in earnings worldwide, as well as spawning a plethora of merchandise and iconic characters like Jack Sparrow, who have become firmly embedded in popular culture.
Considering the immense success of the franchise, it’s not surprising that Bruckheimer is eager to produce more Pirates of the Caribbean sequels. Johnny Depp has played the lead role in the last two films, but his tumultuous legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard has cast a shadow over his career.
Consequently, the actor has lost several roles, and the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean series seemed uncertain without its biggest star. However, Bruckheimer has recently stated his willingness to bring Depp back for a sixth installment.
Despite this, it appears that Keira Knightley has no plans to return to the franchise. If Knightley decides to opt out, it’s possible that Orlando Bloom may follow suit, considering the romantic connection between their characters.
This could leave the future of the franchise resting solely on Depp or the possibility of a reboot or spinoff, which would present its own set of challenges. Along with expressing his desire to bring Depp back, Bruckheimer has also mentioned that the sixth film will feature a younger cast.
Moreover, there is still the ‘under-development’ spinoff starring Margot Robbie. Therefore, while Knightley may be finished with the franchise, the Pirates of the Caribbean series is far from being over.
