With less than a year to go, we still don’t know a whole lot about the fourth Matrix film, including it’s official movie title. Owing to its great commercial success and impact on popular culture, the Matrix franchise is keeping its secrets close to its chest for a grand reveal.
An early test screening of Matrix 4 may give us some insight into it. Twitter user David Manning who was present for it, said that the movie will definitely garner mixed responses. But for those who love it, will enjoy it to the core.
He likens Matrix 4 writer and director Lana Wachowski’s writing to her work in Cloud Atlas, and not Jupiter Ascending.
There’s another big reveal in his tweet, a nonchalant mention of the title: The Matrix Resurrections. This follows in the style of the previous sequels, Reloaded and Revolutions.
Patching clues together, here’s a few other things we know of Matrix 4 so far:
1. Release Date
The expected theatrical release date for Matrix 4 is December 22, 2021. It will also be available on HBO Max, streaming for one month only.
2. Cast and Characters
Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann-Moss will both return to reprise their roles of Neo and Trinity, along with Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian and Daniel Bernhardt playing Agent Johnson.
There are more famous names to the cast list, all whose roles are yet undisclosed: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Eréndira Ibarra, Priyanka Chopra, Andrew Caldwell, Brian J. Smith, Ellen Hollman and Christina Ricci.
3. Summary of the Matrix Universe
In this cyber-punk version of the Earth, self-aware machines have taken over and entrapped humans’ consciousness in a fake world known as The Matrix.
There are a few who are aware of this simulation, and work on overthrowing the machines with the hope that the oracle-proclaimed “Chosen One” Neo will save them all.
Through the insurgents’ efforts Neo is brought back to reality to restore human order in the world.
4. Plot
Lana Wachowski returns as writer, director and producer of the fourth movie. In 2017, Wachowski denied any plans for another installation in the franchise, which was evidenced in the fact that the movies were bundled as a trilogy.
The death of Neo and Trinity will bring a new challenge to how Reeves and Ann-Moss will appear on screen. We’re no strangers to Neo coming back to life because of his anomaly code that also allows him to manipulate the matrix.
Trinity, on the other hand, is not so lucky – as a normal human character, bringing her back to life is an enigma fit for the Matrix.
Besides these details, the plot of Matrix 4 is largely unknown.
Of course, our last clue comes from the recently, unofficially disclosed title of “Resurrection.” Other than a revival of the franchise itself, it is also a not-so-subtle pointer to having The Matrix’s iconic characters back on screen.
The question is – what version will we see them in? Knowing that there are multiple variations of the same character in The Matrix, along with the open-ended possibility of it either being a prequel or sequel, the choices for resurrecting the Matrix franchise are endless.
Bet we’d take both, the blue and red pill, to find this out!
5. About The Matrix: Resurrections
The Matrix: Resurrections will serve as the fourth instalment to the American cyberpunk franchise The Matrix. It is produced, co-written and co-directed by Lana Wachowski who has written for the previous Matrix movies as well.
Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann-Moss will reprise their roles of Neo and Trinity, respectively. Joining them is Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian and Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson.
