At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Keanu Reeves’ popular comic book BRZRKR had its first significant update in a very long time and welcomed some highly sought-after staff. Tomlin, who appeared with Reeves at a BRZRKR panel, shared exciting news about the impending live-action film, which he is also scripting. Tomlin also confirmed during the panel that he has finished and turned in the script for the live-action movie for Netflix.
The duo also delved into the animated series, with Tomlin announcing his plans to assemble a team and commence production this fall. The first story in the comic book series will be adapted into a live-action feature film, followed by an anime spin-off series. Reeves has already been announced as one of the film’s stars.
Stephen Christy, president of Boom! Studios, responded to a question regarding the animated series from the group onstage by saying:
“We all have a very special place in our hearts for the Animatrix. So when we were lucky enough to get an opportunity to collaborate with Netflix on the movie, we just don’t just want to present a movie. We would like to do an adult anime. To have Mattson [Tomlin], who is doing the Terminator as he mentioned…I think we’re oging to have a chance to go to some of the worlds that you see in the comics, the specials…and hopefully it’ll pay tribute to the anime that we love as fans.”
The impending Terminator Zero anime and the studio’s impressive track record of previous successes have instilled confidence in the decision to commence BRZKR’s anime production in the fall of 2024. For fans, this progress is a reassuring sign that the series is in good hands and is moving forward.
Keanu Reeves’ Anime Dreams Are Finally Fulfilled
The anime will have two seasons and will be available on Netflix. Production I.G, a major studio in Japan known for hits like Haikyuu!! and Ghost in the Shell, is not the only notable staff on the project. Mattson Tomlin, known for writing The Batman Part II and Terminator Zero, will write the scripts for both the anime and live-action movie adaptations of the comic. He will bring his unique storytelling approach to the project. Although the director of BRZRKR has not yet been announced, Keanu Reeves expressed interest in the role in 2022.
About BRZRKR
BRZRKR is a comic series written by Keanu Reeves and New York Times bestselling writer Matt Kindt, illustrated by popular Marvel artist Ron Garney and Bill Crabtree, letters by Clem Robins, and character designs and covers by Rafael Grampá and distributed by Boom! Studios. It follows an immortal warrior known as B, fighting his way through time in an effort to end his immortal life. A live-action film and an animated series were announced back in 2021 for Netflix, with Reeves playing the titular role in both.
“The man known only as “B” is half-mortal and half-god, , cursed and compelled to violence… even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the earth for centuries, B may have finally found a refuge – working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, B will be granted the one thing he desires – the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence…and how to end it.”
The anime series will delve deeper into the BRZRKR universe by examining several plot points, as Netflix hinted in January 2021. For the anime, Reeves will return to the role and provide the character’s voice.
