Hoshina stands no chance against #12 in chapter 88 of Kaiju No. 8, titled “He maybe a Leader…But What is He behind Closed Doors?”

It was a rather short chapter that was mostly about the after-effects of Narumi’s battle with #11. We got a little throwback to how Isao started feeling worried about his position because of Narumi. 

It has been a long struggle for the poor guy, and in the end, I think he got the appreciation of the man he admired the most. The chapter also set up the upcoming heavy battle between #12 and Hoshina.

1. Chapter 89 Discussion

Hoshina will try to overcome #12 in chapter 89 of Kaiju No. 8. With his blades broken at the end of the chapter, I think we might soon get a casualty from the hero’s side. 

Fans will really love it if such a twist occurs and one of the commanders actually dies while fighting these monsters. It will add some much-needed depth and emotions to the manga.  

Still, I doubt we will witness anyone dying soon. Despite his sword getting broken, Hoshina will probably find a way out to defeat the monster and claim his victory. I am interested to see how he accomplices that.

The chapter starts with a flashback where Itami finds Isao training late at night. He mocks Isao and says that Isao fears that Narumi might surpass him. He tells Isao that Narumi has been thrown out of his division numerous times because of his laziness.

However, if he has made someone like Isao worry about his position, then he is a real deal. Isao says that he must continue to stand as a wall, at least till Narumi becomes the real deal. 

Back in the present, Itami remembers Isao, hoping that he sees how much Narumi has grown. Narumi tries to call out Isao, telling him to shed a tear or two. He wonders what his idol’s crying face would look like. 

The narrative shifts towards Chofu Airport, where Hoshina is fighting #12. Just as expected, Hoshina gets continuously overwhelmed by #12’s strength. Konomi is shocked to see Hoshina getting overwhelmed for the first time. 

Hoshina thinks that #12 surpasses #10 in all aspects and is reminded of how #10 told him that he was just a prototype. With a heavy attack that breaks Hoshina’s blade, he realizes that #12 is the final product. 

6. About Kaiju No.8

Kaiju No. 8 or Monster #8 is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Naoya Matsumoto. It has been serialized for free on Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ from July 2020.

In Japan, creatures are known as kaiju frequently attack the nation with the Japanese Defense Force in charge of dealing with and killing them.

Childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro vow to become members of the Defense Force after a kaiju destroys their home. Mina becomes a famous commander of the Force while Kafka fails the exam multiple times and becomes a monster sweeper, those in charge of cleaning up a monster’s dead body.

One day a small talking kaiju enters his body through his mouth and he can now turn into a Kaiju himself. This is dubbed “Kaiju No. 8” by the Defense Force.
