#15 unleashes a mental attack on Shinomiya in chapter 80 of Kaiju No. 8, titled “Go Beyond.”

It was quite an emotional and hard-hitting chapter. Shinomiya was finally able to get hold of #15 and landed some heavy blows. She even managed to expose #15’s core.

However, #15 is smarter than anyone imagined. She traps Kikoru in her mind and shows her how useless all her efforts are. Seeing little Kikoru not having anyone close to her alive made me feel really bad for her. 

The last page really broke my heart.

1. Chapter 81 Discussion

Shinomiya might go into depression in chapter 81 of Kaiju No. 8. Seeing one’s traumatic past can be really hard, and seeing Shinomiya in the previous chapter, it definitely looks like she might need some external help to get out of the situation.

I think this is the time when Kafka, or maybe some one else, will enter the scenario and snap Kikoru out of it. I think it will be very difficult for her to return to normal, but there are chances she will use this as her motivation to fight even harder.

Shinomiya has always looked up to her mother. This time, she is determined to surpass her. She lands a heavy blow on #15. Her released force reaches 93%, as high as her mother’s.

Keiji Itami thinks that calling her the strongest first-year student might be an understatement now. Shinomiya slashes #15 into pieces using twin-swallow slash. She reaches 94% of released power. 

She prepares to cut the exposed core, but suddenly #15 attacks her with a strange power and encloses her in a dark place. Her mental stability chart gets disrupted, and her released force falls dramatically. 

Kurusu realizes that it is a mental attack. #15 starts to play with Kikoru’s head asking her why she wants to be strong. Kikoru tells her that she wants to protect the country, but #15 thinks it’s a lie.

She takes Kikoru back to her childhood, where we see her mommy and daddy. She says she wants to be strong so they can be proud of her. #15 tells her that all her hardwork is off no use anymore. 

The people whom she is trying to impress are not around anymore. Thus, it is time for Shinomiya to stop all this.

About Kaiju No.8

Kaiju No. 8 or Monster #8 is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Naoya Matsumoto. It has been serialized for free on Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ from July 2020.

In Japan, creatures are known as kaiju frequently attack the nation with the Japanese Defense Force in charge of dealing with and killing them.

Childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro vow to become members of the Defense Force after a kaiju destroys their home. Mina becomes a famous commander of the Force while Kafka fails the exam multiple times and becomes a monster sweeper, those in charge of cleaning up a monster’s dead body.

One day a small talking kaiju enters his body through his mouth and he can now turn into a Kaiju himself. This is dubbed “Kaiju No. 8” by the Defense Force.
