The story of Kafka Hibino, who can turn into a monster after ingesting one, is finally coming to life. After the massive success of the manga, which was serialized in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump with a total of 12 volumes, it is getting its own anime adaptation. The anime adaptation of the popular manga Kaiju No. 8 by Naoya Matsumoto is finally released on April 13, 2024.

4. What to expect in Kaiju No. 8
In a world where kaiju are the cause of disasters, Japan is the hotspot for suffering at the hands of these monsters compared to the rest of the world. An Anti-Kaiju Defence Force is formed in order to fight these monsters.
The kaiju are segregated into groups based on their ‘fortitude level,’ which is basically a measure of their overall power and strength. The most dangerous ones are assigned a number based on their order of appearance.
After their town is destroyed, Kafka and his childhood friend, Mina, vow to become part of the Defence Force. However, unlike Mina, who is the captain of the Defence Force Third Division at 27, Kafka, at 32, has failed the entrance exam multiple times and is just a cleaning crew member.
After accidentally ingesting a kaiju, Kafka gains the ability to turn into one. He also receives the title of Kaiju No. 8 after managing to escape from the Defence Force. Deciding to keep his new abilities a secret, Kafka passes the entrance exam and becomes a part of the Defence Force, fighting against the kaiju despite now being one himself.

Kaiju No. 8 or Monster #8 is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Naoya Matsumoto. It has been serialized for free on Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ from July 2020.
In Japan, creatures are known as kaiju frequently attack the nation with the Japanese Defense Force in charge of dealing with and killing them.
Childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro vow to become members of the Defense Force after a kaiju destroys their home. Mina becomes a famous commander of the Force while Kafka fails the exam multiple times and becomes a monster sweeper, those in charge of cleaning up a monster’s dead body.
One day a small talking kaiju enters his body through his mouth and he can now turn into a Kaiju himself. This is dubbed “Kaiju No. 8” by the Defense Force.
