One Piece is currently going through the most exciting and thrilling arc in its 20-year long history. Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, mentioned on several occasions that he was excited to draw this arc due to his Japanese pride. Wano Kuni is based on Feudal Era Japan and draws inspiration from much Japanese folklore.
Chapter 999, titled “The Sake I Brewed To Drink With You,” finally revealed Kaido’s Devil Fruit as a Mythical Zoan – The Uo Uo no Mi (Fish Fish Fruit). As Kaido’s Zoan form is clearly an eastern dragon, it may not be very clear for some fans.
In short, Kaido’s Devil Fruit takes inspiration from the Chinese Folklore of The Dragon’s Gate. In folklore, thousands of Koi fish try to swim up a waterfall but most give up before reaching the top.
After centuries, a single Koi fish travels all the way to the top. Admiring the fish’s relentless determination, a God bestows upon it the gift of transformation into a dragon.
1. Kaido’s Devil Fruit
Yonko Kaido, the main antagonist in Wano Kuni, was shrouded in mystery for a long time. His introduction during Dressrosa made every fan squeal with excitement, and ever since then, there have been heated debates about his Devil Fruit in the One Piece community.
Kaido first appeared as an eastern dragon in chapter 921. Law stated that the dragon flying over the Flower Capital is none other than Kaido. This shocking revelation led everyone to believe that Kaido’s Devil Fruit will be a mythical model of the Ryu Ryu no Mi. (It also led to tonnes of memes drawing parallels between Kaido and Shenron from Dragon Ball.)

2. But Wait, Isn’t Kaido a Dragon?
Yes, yes, he is. Well..
Kaido’s Devil Fruit draws inspiration from a famous Chinese folklore – The Legend of the Dragon’s Gate.
This folklore describes a journey taken by thousands of Koi fish swimming relentlessly against a yellow river’s current. At the end of their journey, they encounter a gigantic waterfall. Most of the Koi fish give up at this point and return with the river’s current.
A few, determined to finish their journey, try to climb the waterfall but see no success. After centuries, a single Koi fish manages to swim up the waterfall. In admiration of the fish’s relentless determination, a God bestows upon it the gift of transformation into a dragon.
Due to its bravery, the Koi fish is often associated with Samurai.
3. Hidden in Plain Sight, the Goda Way.
As surprising as it was for many fans, Oda being Oda left hints pointing to this reveal.
I. Kaido’s Tattoo!! How did no one see this? Kaido literally has a giant tattoo of fish scales on his chest.
II. He lives in a country surrounded by waterfalls, and people enter this island by being pulled by giant Koi fish trying to climb up the waterfall!!
III. Even Luffy foreshadowed Kaido’s Devil Fruit when he drew a picture of a merman!
IV. Every fan’s answer to Kaido’s suicidal tendencies is wondering why he doesn’t drown himself. Well, he can’t!! He’s a fish!!
4. What was Kaiod’s Life-Long Debt to Big Mom?
That’s not all; chapter 999 also revealed Kaido’s life-long debt to Big Mom. As it turns out, Big Mom gave Kaido his Devil Fruit the day Roger and Garp fought against the Rox pirates on God’s Valley and defeated them!
