Jurassic World: Dominion is the final installment of the Jurassic franchise and stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, from the current series, as well as Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and other Jurassic Park alumni.
The movie has been directed by Colin Trevorrow, who also directed the first Jurassic World.
The movie features DeWanda Wise, Mamoudou Athie, Campbell Scott, BD Wong, Omar Sy, Isabella Sermon, and Justice Smith in supporting roles.
According to reports, the latest entry in the franchise will be its final film, although that will ultimately be determined by box office revenue and fan demand.
Jurassic World Dominion received its first reviews, and unfortunately, they’re fairly unflattering, given the expectations for the finale of the trilogy.
Jurassic Park, released in 1993, was a huge success and is still the best-reviewed film in the franchise. In both critical and financial terms, the sequels, The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III, fared poorly, eventually killing off the franchise after the third entry grossed only about a third of what the original did.
In 2015, Jurassic World relaunched the franchise, garnering mostly positive reviews, becoming the second-best reviewed version of the Jurassic series behind the original. Although Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom received a massive dip in critical acclaim, it still managed to pull in similar box office numbers, with both Jurassic World films grossing over $1 billion worldwide.
Jurassic World Dominion will be the real test, but the reviews for this latest sequel aren’t hot so far.
Currently, Jurassic World Dominion has an unfavorable Rotten Tomatoes rating of 37%, and it’s slipping fast, taking the unfortunate title of the worst-rated film in the entire franchise.
In spite of some critics being able to ignore the ambiguous narrative and character aspects, the general consensus seems to be that the series has lost the magic and luster that made it great, to begin with.
The final entry in this series may have lost its impact, as well as its fun, in spite of combining the old and new casts and introducing more dinosaurs.
So, should you watch this movie, or skip it because of the reviews?
Jurassic World Dominion may seem like a disaster, but the last installment had similarly bad reviews and still pulled in great box office returns, meaning that fans were satisfied at least to some extent. The same could be said about the Jurassic Park sequels, although their box office returns declined instead of holding steady.
Jurassic World Dominion appears to be quite long, like its contemporary blockbusters. The movie, however, features impressive dinosaur sequences. Fans of the franchise might also enjoy the movie due to the nostalgic touch of having old and new casts together on screen.
If you’re a fan of the franchise, the final installment of the Jurassic World trilogy is something you wouldn’t want to miss.
Even if Jurassic World Dominion is a big, fun, nonsensical mess, audiences and die-hard fans will ultimately decide the film’s fate.
Jurassic World Dominion will be out in theaters on June 10, 2022.
