Jujutsu Kaisen, in its recent release of chapter 266, has brought both joy and melancholy to readers. As one of the most anticipated chapters in the series, there was a lot of hype surrounding it. Then again, the fans were not left disappointed as the chapter showcases the much awaited return of Megumi.
The chapter offers some reveals that not only throw the readers down an abrupt trip into the memory lanes (maybe tear up a little) of characters but also give us an insight into the soul of Megumi. And his desire for a simple yet fulfilling life.
1. Is Megumi finally back in action?
Chapter 266 showcases the efforts of Yuji in persuading Megumi to return. After a seemingly fruitless heart-to-heart, Sukuna finds himself slipping into the shadows, featuring Megumi’s return to action.
Chapter 266 begins with the scene where we can see Yuji Itadori reaching out to Megumi Fushiguro’s soul. In this emotional moment, Megumi pines deeply, wishing for a better world for his sister, Tsumiki. He doesn’t want a world where Tsumiki has to live in agony but one where they can live in peace.
Yuji sees this and talks to him about his own realizations through the years. He talks about unavoidable situations and people who have faced them, like Grandpa Itadori. Who, faced with lung cancer, chose not to be treated due to the side effects on the body, knowing it would cost him years.
Yuji offers his understanding and deep empathy for the agony and despair Megumi is feeling. Yet, he knows that he cannot be hypocritical enough to ask Megumi to return to a world without hope.
Yet, astonishingly, amidst the clash of Yuji and Sukuna, we see that Sukuna’s leg is submerged in the shadows, signaling the return of Megumi. Megumi’s soul starts to fight back, and Megumi and Yuji team up to take on Ryomen Sukuna.
2. Sukuna vs. Yuji
Yuji opens his domain to tackle Sukuna, the demon king, who in turn counters with the usage of the Hollow Wicker Basket. Sukuna himself is ridiculously strong, but he is unable to bring out his full power due to a few reasons.
Sukuna struggles to use the Reverse Cursed Technique properly during the fight. We can trace back the reason to the lingering effects left by Gojo’s domain during their fight. The chapter showcases how combat experience is a defining aspect of combat as we see the usage of the weak Hollow Wicker Basket and Simple Domain, used strategically, exerting a serious amount of power.
Sukuna is seen compensating for the weak and low output by maintaining the hand sign posture, even after activating the Hollow Wicker Basket. This allows him to keep on fighting without being dominated by Yuji’s domain. (He also keeps saying things like – I will kill all humans except you!!!!)
The fight between Sukuna and Yuji reaches its peak as they exert their highest combat power and techniques to clash head-on. Sukuna is livid with rage, due to him noticing that Yuji actually pities him. (seen from the last chapter’s peek into Sukuna’s past).
We see a shift with Yuji telling the kid version of Megumi that he will be sad without him. Megumi’s soul fights back, and Sukuna hurriedly tries to plunge Megumi’s soul by using his ‘Bath’. Yuji’s Dismantle renders it useless, and Megumi’s struggles intensify further.
In a surprising twist, Sukuna gets desperate and enraged and activates his domain for the second time, but we see that he is suddenly showing signs of being shocked. The Demon King of curses isn’t one to show such emotions. We find out that this is because of the locations of one of Sukuna;s fingers. The fight approaches its climax, and the cliffhanger has us drooling for more. Let’s see what the future has in store for Yuji and Sukuna. But for now, rejoice as Megumi is back.
