If you thought Pokémon Detective Pikachu would end up as a one-hit wonder, then you are up for a surprise. The live-action adaptation of Pokémon will return to screens with a sequel. With that said, the crew that will helm this film is also getting finalized.
As per the entertainment news website Deadline, Jonathan Krisel is in talks with Legendary Pictures to direct the sequel to Pokémon Detective Pikachu. Chris Galletta will write the script for the movie.
Work on a sequel had begun as early as 2019 when the original film was still in theaters. It was revealed then that Oren Uziel was writing the script.
Jonathan Krisel is known for co-creating the IFC comedy series Portlandia, for which he was also the writer and the executive producer. He is also known for the Zach Galifianakis-starrer FX comedy series Baskets, for which he was the co-creator, writer, and director.
Chris Galletta is known for writing the screenplay for the 2013 coming-of-age film The Kings of Summer.
Pokémon Detective Pikachu was directed and written by Rob Letterman and co-written by Nicole Perlman. The 2019 film approximately grossed $430 million at the box office worldwide. It starred Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith, Ken Watanabe, and Kathryn Newton.
Although it is not confirmed, there are rumors that Ryan Reynolds will return for the sequel. It would be interesting to see if it continues from the first movie. A fresh story is good, but I think it would have to reconnect with audiences all over again.
