In 2011, HBO adapted George R.R. Martin’s bestselling fantasy epic, A Song of Ice and Fire, into the hit television series, Game of Thrones. The show quickly became a pop culture phenomenon with millions of fans watching the HBO series.
Now, three years since season 8 came to a close, the network remains very interested in growing the franchise further through various spin-offs. The first, House of the Dragon, will premiere this August.
Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, played a key role throughout Game of Thrones. Jon played a crucial role in the series’ shifting plots, and most notably he was the center of one of the biggest twists when he was killed off in season 5, only to be revived later.
Game of Thrones concluded with Jon killing Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), his lover and just-revealed aunt, and being banished from Westeros; he went north with the Wildlings and eventually seemed at peace. However, his peace might not last for too long.
A potential Game of Thrones spin-off series centered on Jon Snow is now being developed by HBO, as reported by THR.
Though the series is still in very early development, Harington is set to reprise his role as Jon in the upcoming spin-off. Members of the creative team have not been announced yet.
It’s an exciting development for HBO’s Game of Thrones franchise. The network management began looking at potential offshoot possibilities even before the flagship series ended.
The Jon Snow project marks the first potential Game of Thrones spinoff that would take place after the series ended; all of the other potential spinoffs, including 10,000 Ships and 9 Voyages, are prequels.
Nonetheless, it shouldn’t be surprising that HBO is pushing the timeline forward. While Game of Thrones had a tendency to kill off characters, a number of characters were left alive and ready to possibly lead their own spin-off series.
Game of Thrones season 8 concluded with Jon leaving Westeros for good, making him an ideal choice to take on a new storyline. His adventures beyond the Wall could offer a greater exploration of Martin’s world and might even lead to the discovery of new creatures. Many would argue that Game of Thrones already spends a large amount of time outside the Wall, and they wouldn’t be wrong.
The Jon Snow-led sequel, however, can go deeper than ever before without needing to return to the Westeros storylines. There’s a good chance other fan favorites, such as Tormund (Kristofer Hivju), could make a return.
With House of the Dragon quickly approaching, it is not clear what HBO’s priorities are for the Game of Thrones sequel. Even so, with a popular character like Jon involved, there is a good chance the show will move forward quickly once the creative team is put in place.
