Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick franchise, mentions that the plot of John Wick 5 is still uncertain, though the sequel is still a possibility.
While Stahelski may not be finished with the franchise, the storyline for the next movie remains unknown to him. In John Wick: Chapter 4, Keanu Reeves’ titular character was able to defeat the Marquis de Gramont, securing his freedom from the High Table, but this victory came at a great cost.
John Wick died and was buried next to his wife by Winston. This unexpected turn of events was a surprise for fans, especially given that John Wick 5 was originally planned to be filmed immediately after.
Screen Rant recently had an exclusive interview with Chad Stahelski, in celebration of the release of the new John Wick movie. During the interview, the director provided insights into John Wick: Chapter 4 and the franchise’s future.
When asked about John Wick 5, which was previously announced, especially given John Wick’s apparent death, Stahelski confirmed that another sequel is still in the works. However, he also admitted that he has no idea what the storyline would be at this point.

I’m super grateful for that opportunity, and if it does come to fruition sometime in the future… I don’t know what John Wick 5 is right now. I may have thoughts, ideas, and fragments of stuff, but I think I need a little time to breathe and see how this one does. All I see when I watch are my mistakes and shortcomings. “I should have been a better director. I should have been better here.” I just need time to process that, grow creatively, and work my craft in probably some other fields. [Then] I’ll take what I learned and maybe make something better than I’ve already done. My biggest goal is that [hopefully] you love them all, but that hopefully you see the evolution. That the crew and I, my stunt team and Keanu, learn something. We tried to not make the same mistakes, we tried to get a little better, and we tried to expand in ways that are interesting.
Stahelski also revealed that he and Reeves are not ruling out the possibility of a fifth John Wick movie, even though the protagonist appeared to die at the end of the fourth film. Reeves, on the other hand, has stated that he would only consider returning for another installment if the story is compelling and if Stahelski is still directing.
Despite the bittersweet ending for John Wick’s character in the latest film, the possibility of a fifth installment remains a topic of debate. Similar to how Logan concluded its protagonist’s story in a powerful and meaningful way, John Wick: Chapter 4 has managed to offer a satisfying conclusion for Wick’s journey while paving the way for the franchise to continue beyond him.
The latest movie also introduced new elements to the series, including a compelling conflict between Caine and Akira, despite Caine’s eventual redemption in the film’s climax.
Producer Erica Lee of Lionsgate has revealed her plans for the future of the John Wick franchise. She announced that they are currently working on a secret John Wick project in addition to John Wick: Chapter 5 and Ballerina 2.
The prequel series The Continental is also set to explore new storylines and shed light on unanswered questions from the franchise. Lionsgate’s interest in keeping the action universe alive suggests that there is potential for the franchise to continue even without Keanu Reeves’ titular assassin.
