John Barrowman Picks His Next ‘Doctor Who’ Candidate

Doctor Who star John Barrowman has nominated It’s A Sin‘s Olly Alexander to play the next incarnation of The Doctor, in case rumors of Jodie Whittaker exiting the show come true.

Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack Harkness, an immortal conman and Time Agent from the 51st century, has been a favorite part of the show for fans since Doctor Who was revived in 2005.

He recently made a victorious return to the role after a long absence, first in “Fugitive of the Judoon” of Season 12, and then playing a bigger role in helping The Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker, in the New Year’s Day special, “Revolution of the Daleks.”

Barrowman revealed in an interview on the UK morning chat show Lorraine that he thinks that Olly Alexander should take over the role.

It’s a Sin is, there you go, another pandemic that we went through and that’s why I say, get the vaccine. We as gay men and women have been through a pandemic already. 37 million people worldwide have died from HIV and AIDS, and you know, get the vaccine. Anyway, however, Olly would be amazing, he’s quirky, he’s fun, he’s a lovely actor and I think he would make a wonderful Doctor.”

Olly Alexander’s performance in It’s A Sin has earned him ample praise and international attention. He clearly has an enthusiastic approval from Barrowman and would surely have the support of Russell T Davies, too, if offered the role.

Actor and comedian, John Bishop, is also set to join The Doctor and Yaz, played by Mandip Gill, on their adventures in Season 13, which is presently being filmed. Rumors enveloping Whittaker preparing to leave the show after season 13 have neither been confirmed nor denied by the BBC yet, but they have been enough to get people theorizing about who the Fourteenth Doctor might be played by.

There’s a lot of gossip around who might replace Whittaker, with fans proposing everyone from Paddington’s Ben Whishaw to I May Destroy You’s Michaela Coel.

While Olly Alexander might prove to be an excellent consideration for playing The Doctor, there might be a conflict between fans that would rather the series continue its trend of female Doctors, and others who believe the return to male Doctors is an admission the first female Doctor was a mistake. Whoever it might be, fans can only aspire to see the next Doctor interact with Captain Jack sometime in the future.
