Netflix fantasy drama series The Sandman, a Warner Bros. TV production, has been one of the most hopeful adaptations that DC Comics fans have been waiting for ardently.
The Sandman is based on the fantasy comics of the same name (1989-1996) by Neil Gaiman and follows the story of Dream, one of the seven Endless and the king of Dreams and Nightmares, and how he remakes his realm of The Dreaming after his century-long imprisonment.
One of the most memorable characters in The Sandman comics was John Constantine, an occult detective who takes on enemies and cases dealing in the paranormal world. But the show has slightly different plans for the sorcerer. Neil Gaiman decided that the character will be adapted as a woman in the Netflix TV series.
Doctor Who star Jenna Coleman plays Johanna Constantine, a gender-flipped version of the DC character in The Sandman TV series. But that’s not all! Coleman plays two roles in the fantasy drama, one of Constantine and the other of Lady Johanna, the 18th Century ancestor of Constantine.
If Johanna Constantine is to fulfill the role of John Constantine of the comics, she will either prove to be a formidable ally or a dangerous enemy. In the comics, Constantine was an excellent paranormal detective and professional sorcerer with powers like dimension travel, astral projection, demon summoning and exorcism, and pyrokinesis.
The DC character has been adapted onto TV and movies, the most recent being Arrowverse’s version of Constantine, played by Matt Ryan. Coleman’s Johanna Constantine will play a critical role in the Netflix series, according to the comic’s author. How will she change Dream’s fate? Watch now to unveil the mystery!
